Van Halen – Jamie's Cryin' Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Dcat is right. She is in love with a guy, but the guy only wants sex from her. When she refuses to continue to sleep with him, he leaves her. She still cares for him, hoping that he will call or write, but deep down she knows that he would never do so. Read the lyrics again and you see what i mean.

Van Halen – 5150 Lyrics 18 years ago
Van Hagar is right on. All due respect, DragonKnight, but are you fucking kidding me? Maroon 5? Van Halen is a band that thrives on skill and hard rock, while Maroon 5, though they have a couple of half-decent hits, are a fucking pop music-based band. There should be a law against comparing great bands like Van Halen with shit bands like Maroon 5. Where are Maroon 5 now, by the way? They are fast fading, fucking flavors of the week. Van Halen started in '73 and lasted all the way to 1998, with sporadic performances after that. Maroon 5 have only got, what, two albums? How many times have Van Halen gone multi-platinium? Maroon 5 can't even spell the word "platinium".

But Maroon 5 is no worse than cock-sucking, ass-licking, uncle robert-auntie suzie-fucking posers modern "rock" bands like Nickleback, three doors down, lifehouse, creed, etc. How dare they shame and whore the name and spirit of rock music by calling their lame-ass, all-riff-no-skill-or-drum/bass/guitar solos songs ROCK? I'm not kidding but i can outplay all the guitarists of all these modern "rock" bands any time of the day, with one hand tied to my back. Talentless fucks.

As for what the song means, I don't know. Thanks.

Love,

Eddie Truck Halen

Steely Dan – Reelin' In The Years Lyrics 18 years ago
This is a fantstic song. The guitar work made it on the list of top 100 guitar solos of all time as voted by Guitar World magazine readers. I'm surprised that no one has contributed as to what they think the song means. Ok, this is what i think the song means. My comments are in brackets.

Your everlasting summer
You can see it fading fast

(The writer of this song is writing this song for a girl whom he loves but the girl has chosen someone else. The first two lines in about how the girl can feel that she is aging. "Summer" here refers to the prime of our life, i.e. 15-30 years of age. The girl here is, perhaps, fast approaching her 30s.)

So you grab a piece of something
That you think is gonna last

(The girl quickly grabs on to a man whom she thinks she would be able to spend the rest of her life with.)

You wouldn't know a diamond
If you held it in your hand

(Here the writer of the song refers to himself as a diamond, how he believes that he is the best person or her, but she doesn't know shit. She wouldn't know the material value of a wad of cash or a diamond if hit her in the face, just as she doesn't know how good the song writer is for her.)

The things you think are precious
I can't understand

(The song writer disagrees with the man she has chosen and doesn't understand what he sees in him.)

CHORUS:
Are you Reelin' In The Years?
Stowin' away the time

(The chorus here is basically the song writier asking the girl whether years of partying and making the wrong choices have taken their toll on the girl.)

Are you gatherin' up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?

(Here the song writer is asking if she looks back proudly at the hearts she's borken, at the number of man who were crazy for her. It also asks her if she had enough of the attention and love he showered on her, and the tears he cried for her.)

You been tellin' me you're a genius
Since you were seventeen
In all the time I've known you
I still don't know what you mean
The weekend at the college
Didn't turn out like you planned
The things that pass for knowledge
I can't understand

(Here the song writer is generally critical of the girl, of her self-assured wisdom. Crudely-speakng, he thinks the girl is full of herself, thinks that she is smart, but that is quite far from the truth. It also hints that all the ideals that she has during her younger years (college, seventeen) have turned to dust.)

I spend a lot of money
And I spent a lot of time
The trip we made in Hollywood
Is etched upon my mind
After all the things we've done and seen
You find another man
The things you think are useless
I can't understand

(This part is the song writer's reminisences on the good times that he and the girl spent, the things that they have gone through, the memories that would forever be in his mind). Those memories are now corrupted by what the song writer thinks is the wrong man chosen by the girl.)

Overall, this song is quite straight forward. This is my take on it. Hope to see some other interpretations of this song.

I agree with pretty much all the comments on this page before mine. The only thing which i felt all the previous comments left out is the death penalty. Observe the line "a syringe and a vein". I think it refers to lethal injection, the death penalty of choice in the US.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Purple Haze Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song could be both about drugs and a certain girl. If i had to pick one, I'd say the song is about marijuana. The lines "purple haze all in my brain" and "'Scuse me while is kiss the sky" seem to refer to the ultraviolet-ness and the "high-till-i-can-touch-the-sky" feeling you get from smoking weed. As for the line "What ever it is, that girl put a spell on me", lots of things like cars, guitar, etc, have been refered to in the third-party as female (eg. BB King's guitar is called "Lucille"). In this case, marijuana ("Mary Jane") could be the girl in reference. So I think that this song is definately about marijuana, a girl, or both.

MSK941, you are entitled to your opinions, but I don't think any of Hendrix's songs suck. Also, I don't think that this song is about Jimi himself. Notice the line "Flamin' hair a blowin' in the wind". Flaming hair is used to discribe red/ginger colored hair. Hendrix's hair is definately not red/ginger. However, I do believe that the song is definately partially influenced by Hendrix's own expriences. Pretty good song, though not my favorite fro Hendrix.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Red House Lyrics 18 years ago
I think floatOn33 is wrong. This song is definately not about his mother. Who the hell calls their own mom "baby"? Its so obvious that the "baby" here refers to his girlfriend. Gage1 is right. This song is about some guy who went to jail for a 100 days for some petty offense and took half a day before he reached his old house where he used to live with his gf before his ass got thrown in jail (hence, the "99 and one half days" line.)

Turns out, his girl has left him and some one else has moved in (hence, the "wait a minute, somethings wrong, the key would unlock this door." lyric. Usually, the locks are changed when new owners move into a house.)

"But that's alright, I've got my guitar, look out now" represents the optimism of the guy. And the ending, "'cause if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will" is typical of a blues man, who, by stereotype, is always looking to "score" with chicks.

Love this song. One of the best blues songs ever, making references to everyday life of the blues man (like Born Under a Bad Sign by Albert King). Hendrix is God.
