This song is clearly about a kidnapping, and it's being sung from two different perspectives: the kidnapper and possibly a parent or friend/loved one of the person who was kidnapped.

It's pretty obvious that the part "Why did father give these humans free will" is soley from the perspectives of the angels, not Maynard himself, so your whole thing about Maynard "realizing the existence of a higher being" is completely pointless now.
You don't have to believe in a higher being to write a story or song about it. |

this song isn't about drugs...
the only possible reference to drugs could be the part "i break the surface so i can breathe" but that could have plenty of other possible meanings. the "tie my arms" part (note how it says arms not arm) means exactly what it says, it's a contradiction...same with the "build a fire" part as well.
this song is most likely about the loss or death of a loved one like Bellyfull of Swans stated above. |

I can't believe no one's commented this song yet, it's one of their best.
I think that the song could be about how badly patriarchal society treats women. It makes several references to exploitation and macho one-track-mindedness, but the line "to always sell what we can't own" implies that in general women are far less bound than men because they still have their dignity intact. I don't really know what to make of the first bit of the song, but I don't think that it is connected directly to the main part. Perhaps a reference to how children grow up taking on their parent's behavior until they either do something extreme or someone breaks the cycle? |

I know there is this generic commonplace that every band that gets labeled with that term hates it. They feel scandalized by it.
