XTC – The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead Lyrics 18 years ago
It is perhaps instinctive to try to work out exactly who Peter Pumpkinhead is supposed to be a metaphor for. In fact, he is no-one in particular. Rather, he is a generic figurehead who advocates a more tolerant, progressive, and inclusive society. The unfortunate truth is that there have been a great many such individuals throughout history who have had their efforts for good stymied through various means - some of them fatal.

Supertramp – Bloody Well Right Lyrics 18 years ago
The benefits of "the old school tie". The complainant to whom these lyrics are addressed presumably attended a presigious public school, and is hence well connected at the top echelons of society. In response to complainant, the respondent makes it abundently clear that he is aware of the influence this person holds, and questions why he is being bothered by this issue when the complainant could quickly resolve it by simply taking it to whoever of his former classmates now has authority in the matter.

Supertramp – Crime of the Century Lyrics 18 years ago
My thoughts are that we are so blinkered by the crimes that inspire the headlines necessary to sell newspapers, that we fail to notice that there are much greater crimes being committed against society and the environment by "these men of lust, greed, and glory" - multinationals and the governments that serve and protect them. However, it is the last four lines that are most powerful - while us ordinary people are willing to vote for these governments, purchase the products of these multinationals, and believe what we hear in the media, then surely the responsibility for these "crimes" rests with us. Of course, this assumes that we have the luxury of choice, which sadly is becoming decreasingly the case.

XTC – Your Dictionary Lyrics 18 years ago
Not particularly subtle by XTC standards, anyway "I'm not so sure that Joey wed a Virgin Mary" could refer both to the end of XTC's relationship with its then record label, and the end of lead singer Andy Partridge's marriage to his then-wife Marianne. "Now that I can talk all your corn I'll reap" possibly alludes to the artist royalties that finally started to flow through to the band at around the time this song was written.
