I first heard it on the Kia commercial I had no idea it was so sad til I looked up the lyrics and heard the full song. I took it all a lot more literally. I think the girl and him had a mutual acquaintance that died. Maybe it was her husband/boyfriend and his friend/brother etc. I think they both loved him. They still miss him dearly ("sing his goodbye songs"). He thinks it's been long enough and she should move on, but she can't. When he talks to her he reminisces and it makes her miss him even more ("brings her down"). He thought that every time he saw her he was making things harder for her so he avoided her "hid", but that just made her feel worse, "made her want to cry". Maybe he was trying to literally paint a portrait of his friend/brother. Maybe he just wanted to see his face again but he couldn't get it right. He dropped his brush and hurt his hand ... whether he finished the painting or not it didn't bring him back. He just couldn't get anything right with himself, with the girl, the painting, and the pain of losing his friend. He decided to give up. Maybe instead of looking for a solution just let time heal his wounds fully. That was my take on it at least. Great song. |

I think it's just about a paranoid neurotic guy that met a girl at a bar or something. Socially inept that feat alone was like him coming out of his cage. He went home before her, and his paranoia is giving him nightmares about what she might be doing, namely cheating. I think this song is about loving a girl you can't really have. Maybe because she's with some guy, with a friend of yours, whatever. His hope for being with her winding in and winding out. One moment he believes in it so strongly and the next he can't. Like an oversized diamond ring, she catches everyone's eye and she simply overwhelms him. The more he knows, the more he loves her and the more he's motivated to be with her. He's an insecure, unconfident guy, but she brings out the best in him, because of her he can see things in himself that he never could before. It may be selfish of him to want to take her from whoever she's with, and it may be wrong but he can't help wanting to. It feels so right, that it almost vindicates him from the guilt of it. By saying his defense is paper thin, I think he means that ya know just one touch and he might not be able to resist going too far, telling her too much, even though he shouldn't. He wants to slip away in that moment but ... yeah, his hope for that, and his hope for them is dangling. Though this may describe Peter's situation pretty well, I think pretty much anyone can relate to it. How many other guys out there have been overwhelmed by a girl they can't have? |

I think this song is just saying not to deny your darkside, your greed, your anger and your own baggage. Because after all anger is a part of passion and greed is a part of ambition, your dark really can define your light with just a different perspective. If you do deny it like being "pissed about being pissed", you'll put the thorn in your own side and when you lose yourself to yourself, you can become so lost you'll resist all emotion. The chorus saying that time and time again you'll wish to deny your own emotions instead of dealing with them, but you shouldn't because you can't keep running away from yourself. My thoughts anyway after hearing it just now. |

This is a great song. I love Sierra Swan's voice in the back. When I think of what it means, I imagine someone absolutely struggling with being alone. Sierra Swan's voice, like a voice inside their head, trying to keep them strong. It's trying convince them everything's fine, but at the end it just breaks down and begs "If it's fine, then stay." It gets me everytime, I absolutely love this song. |

I think it's just about some guy whose perception of everything is tainted by his depressing outlook. I've always thought the song was pretty damn catchy. They sure did overplay it on the radio though, annoyed the hell out of me. That was a long time ago though, I'm hearing it now for the first time in a long time and I like it again. XP I think i'll give their other songs a try. |

I think it's about a guy desperately clinging to someone. They want him to be perfect, so he tries, but he realizes he's losing himself in the process. It leaves him so empty he sometimes contemplates suicide, he hates it, but this person is the only thing he has to hold onto. I think he believed that if he pretended for long enough he would eventually become just that, but in the final verse he's realizing that that's impossible; it never gets easy. "If you'd believe it's in my soul, I'd say all the words that I know just to see if it would show." I think he's saying if that person believes that he can be perfect he'll try, but he'll just let 'em down again. So now he decides he's better off alone. |

To me it sounds like someone who's forced to grow up too fast; missed out on their childhood. He now holds a lot of resentment for whomever forced that upon him and regrets having to do it ... but what else could he have done? "The killer in me is the killer in you" sounds to me like, although he was the one to kill the child in him, whomever forced him to do it is as much at fault. Now thinking back on the years burn because of the things he missed out on. |

I can see the kids with cancer theory. "Meat eating orchids," the cancer, will kill anyone man, woman, or child. "Cut myself on angel's hair and baby breath" Cut by something as soft as those flowers means you're fragile, like a cancer leaves you weak. "Broken hymen of your highess, I'm left black." The broken hymen, being concieved, and born into cancer (black). "Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back" Wishin' he was never born. I have no idea where the "priceless advice" fits in with that theory though. XP |

I also think it's about bi-polar disorder. It causes big mood swings and shit. Extreme depressions and extremem mania. Lithium is used as a mood stabilizer for people with the disorder. I think most of the song is describing such mood swings, i.e. going from "I love you" to "I kill you" so quickly. The line "Sunday morning is every day for all I care, and I'm not scared" is saying to me, screw religion. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not very religious, but I swear I've seen it in some movies/shows ... In some churches there are small alters to kneel at with candles, you light one and say a prayer or the other way around, I dunno. I think he's saying to light his candles in a daze cause his god is a drug, lithium, because it's the only thing that stabilizes his mood. Just my thoughts, dunno really. |
