personally, i don't think he's going to hang himself. btw, this is a beautiful song that i've been listening to all morning. i won't get into the reasons, but it'll probably reflect in my analysis anyway. the guy in this song is surprised that his significant other is just packing up the room. he doesn't understand why she needs to leave. "The trouble understand, is she got reasons he don't Funny how he couldn't see at all, 'til she grabbed up her coat" but still there's nothing he can do about it, but smoke his cigarette and hang... hang around waiting for her to return (if she ever does). there's nothing else hed rather do. he can't change the current situation, so he'll just hang, because it doesn't really matter to her. "But if things don't work out like we think And there's nothing there to ease this ache But if there's nothing there to make things change If it's the same for you, I'll just hang" that's the way i currently am viewing the song. but, i can also see how it would apply to friends who are interested in one another. then the girl leaves, and the guy just stays around, still not changing anything about his life. |

to me this song represents a relationship where the girl is just "looking right through" him. she's so practical that she can't give in to love, because it's not something tangible or practical enough for her. but he still loves her. i came to this conclusion due to my own experience.... i was laying outside with a very close guy friend of mine, who i have been in love with on and off for about 4 years. well this happened to be one of those on times. anyway, we were laying outside looking at the stars and i commented on how pretty the stars were and he basically gave me an astronomy lesson, like which ones weren't actually stars, and i immediately thought of this song. He wouldn't just give in to the beauty of the moment. He's so "practical in the things" he says, and he "looks right through me." But it's still "bending my mind again." |
