The Verve Pipe – Real Lyrics 19 years ago
Or he sees her masturbating, which leads him to do the same. "I'm taking flight, seeking relief, the lure of handkerchiefs so white." It's a twisted little song, but I love it.

David Poe – Reunion Lyrics 19 years ago
I originally thought the line was "frozen cold," too, but listening really closely it sounds like "pools" to me.

The suicide stuff makes a lot of sense. My initial interpretation of the song was that it was about a family with a history of abuse. The stuff about the sister and her husband, the "They are the reason my love gets strong" line, and the bit about the mother: "Did you see her face? There are some things/Time won't erase." I saw that as a guy being brought to meet his girlfriend's family and discovering the level of dysfunction therein.

David Poe – Love Won't Last The Afternoon (Lullaby) Lyrics 19 years ago
What I always loved about this song is the moral confusion the character in the song seems to feel. He knows what he's doing is wrong, he feels guilty, even asks to be forgiven for it, but at the same time he keeps the affair going. The promise of ending it carries throughout the song, but it's always some vague future proclamation: "But it's ending soon/Love won't last the afternoon." And he even explicitly blames the person he's cheating on for driving him to do it! A surprisingly complex little character study for a four minute song.

David Poe – California Lyrics 19 years ago
Thanks for the lyric fix. That was the one line that was really giving me fits.

David Poe is absolutely one of the best there is. He needs to start coming up to Seattle so I can see the man play live for once...

Gin Blossoms – You Cost Me Too Much Lyrics 19 years ago
Not new... as I understand it, this song was an acoustic demo recorded in the pre-"New Miserable Experience" days. I don't know what, if any, releases it's been included on; I just found an mp3 of it a few years back.

It's a great song, though. Really simple four-chord deal with a great melody, and, as you can see, great lyrics.

paloalto – Monolith Lyrics 19 years ago
One big correction...
It's not "Come on, bitch," it's "Come of age".
Other than that, though, fine work. And a great song. What it all means, however, I haven't a clue.

Ryan Adams – The Drugs Not Working Lyrics 19 years ago
Chanelling the spirit of Lou Reed (presumably from a time in the future in which Lou Reed is dead). How brilliant is the lyric, "She was a junkie and I know it's cliche/But then so was her life, I mean, she lived in LA"? Pretty brilliant, right?

The Gufs – For A Ride Lyrics 19 years ago
The most angst-free love song I've ever heard. Just reading the words out of the context of the song, they sound a little cheesy and uninspired, but when you hear the melody and the music behind it, it just flat out works.

My Friend Steve – Better Left Behind Lyrics 19 years ago
I, too, once dated a girl who believed herself to be a better writer than she actually was. I wore out my lifetime's worth of faked sincerity over the course that particular relationship.

Total non sequitur, but is this not the catchiest damn song you've ever heard?

Something For Kate – Old Pictures Lyrics 19 years ago
The line "I remembered you on trains/So now you're on every train I hear" always makes me think of the movie "Before Sunrise".

But the song is definitely about the way we remember people. Even the people we cared about the most, after enough time, fade away to nothing more than "whispers" and "reflections off a window". And it seems the person in the song blames himself for this loss. "I wished that you were gone/So now you're gone", and the repetition of "I turned you into...." He's put upon himself responsibility for the natural course of memory. It's as if he can't bear that fact that his memory of someone he loved so much can become so hazy, so he tells himself that's not normal, that it's something he's done and should be ashamed of.

Pete Yorn – So Much Work Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's just about people trying to forge a connection, and the difficulties that life throws in the way of that effort, but how ultimately it's worth the work.

But the melody, and Pete's voice when he sings the lines, "And he says, 'I know about your man"/And their hearts will be broken if she can't decide between them," rips my heart out every time I hear it. Gorgeous song.

Pete Yorn – Crystal Village Lyrics 19 years ago
Fantastic song. I agree on wondering why it's not huge. I can't even find any decent guitar tablature for it anywhere...

Anyway. I think the whole "Crystal Village" motif is more than just representative of the past. I think it's representative of a fantasy version of the past. Phrases like "crystal village", "twilight sages"; these are all clues that the past he's remembering isn't really the past that existed in this relationship. And the repetition of "It was good in the beginning" tends to underscore that. He may be trying to convince himself, even more than her, that it was "good in the beginning".

Which, I guess when you think about it, is a remarkably depressing interpretation of a remarkably uplifting song. But I just calls 'em like I sees 'em.
