Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland, 1945 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
being buried alive is absolutely literal. that's how she died... the franks and the van pels began living in the attic before 1945...and "then they buried her alive/ one evening 1945"...see, a few weeks after she died the allied armies freed the prison camp that she was at. "And only weeks before the guns All came and rained on everyone" "And it's so sad to see the world agree That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies " I think that this image is one of the saddest on the cd. I picture the Nazis heaping the bodies of the jews into a pile and pushing them into a grave. Faces filled with flies....terrible. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Here is what I believe the song to mean...especially after hearing Jeff Mangum explain that the song is about a family in Europe in the 1940's...in particular one member of that family. The song is told from the view point of Jeff the entire time. "Daddy please hear this song that I sing In your heart there's a spark that just screams For a lover to bring a child to your chest that could lay as you sleep And love all you have left like your boy used to be Long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet" I agree with the previously stated position of Daddy being God. I feel that this is backed up by Jeff's earlier version of Two Headed Boy (played at Jittery Joe's) " daddy please hear this song that i sing in your heart there's a spark that just screams for a lover to bring a child to your arms that could lay as you sleep and love all that you are like your boy used to be before he went and tore at your heart" Jesus was "wrapped in swaddling clothes" or perhaps the cloth he wore on the cross. Warm and wet from blood? Jesus was the only one who truly loved all that God is. "Before he went and tore at your heart" God turned his back on Jesus when he took on the sins of the world on the cross. That certainly would be tearing at his heart. "Blister please with those wings in your spine Love to be with a brother of mine How he'd love to find your tongue in his teeth In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight Sounding only at night as you sleep" Blister = sister at the "Live at Jittery Joe's version". This "sister" is Anne Frank. The wings in her spine are showing that she's dead...Jeff represents this by giving us the picture of an angel. Anne Frank would love to be with a brother of (Jeff's) who is Peter van Pels...the boy who stayed in the attic with her. His tongue in her teeth is the two of them kissing. She wanted to kiss him. He wanted to understand her, to know her secrets that she only let out in her dreams. "In my dreams you're alive and you're crying, as your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet, rings of flowers around your eyes and I'll love you for the rest of your life..." This is Jeff singing about his dreams with Anne Frank. He has admitted to having dreams about her. In "My Dreamgirl Don't Exist" he says "she's just a picture in a history book". "Brother see we are one in the same And you left with your head filled with flames And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth Push the pieces in place Make your smile sweet to see Don't you take this away I'm still wanting my face on your cheek" The brother mentioned is Peter. They both love/loved Anne Frank and Jeff is saying "See, we're both alike." Peter survived a death march, but he died a couple days later. Jeff is asserting that Peter was shot: "And how you left with your head filled with flames/ and you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth". Jeff is asking Peter to compose himself after his death. It's over and he'll never have to go through it again. Jeff and Peter are the two headed boy. Jeff wants his face on Peter's cheek. They are the same and Jeff would like to be with Peter. "And when we break we'll wait for our miracle God is a place where some holy spectacle lies And when we break we'll wait for our miracle God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life" Their faces seperate and Jeff is waiting for their miracle...heaven. They will be with each other. Describing God as a place instead of what people commonly describe God as...a person...is brilliant. They will not with God for the rest of their lives....they will live IN God...eternally. "Two headed boy she is all you could need She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires And retire to sheets safe and clean But don't hate her when she gets up to leave" Anne Frank is all that either one of them would need. She will be with them and nourish them, but she could not be with them forever, so Jeff reminds himself and Peter not to hate her for what she cannot control. The only reason they could hate her is because they love her so much. |

I definately agree with yossarian about the death coming at the hands of the boy's father. To understand what is meant by "the light distorts so strange" we have to understand what Jeff percieves the light to be. It could be as subvert stated..."through the eyes of a christian, he sees things don't make sense". I would like to offer this alternate explanation: The boy is looking up through the water at those who forced the baptism on him. Jeff could be saying that it's not Christianity that is wrong...just the way that these people distort it. |
