A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 17 years ago
I wish people who only want the artist's 'official' meaning and keep telling everyone what the artist said would stay off this site. We don't care what a third party can parrot to us here. This site is about openly interpreting what songs mean to the listener. Geez!

A Perfect Circle – 3 Libras Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about reaching out to someone in love and being ignored or 'stepped over' by that person. I believe this song is very personal and specific. I think Maynard was in love with someone who had been hurt in a prior relationship and failed to realize that he was there for her or, worse, that she wasn't interested in him.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Thirty Three Lyrics 17 years ago
1. I am a die-hard Smashing Pumpkins fans.

2. This is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song.

3. The number Thirty-Three refers to the highest degree in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. In this song, as in so many others in the full panoply of Pumpkins discography, Billy is revealing the occult aspects of his drug-scorched mind and soul. (Listen to Sandoz.) The protagonist of the song is on the downward-spiral ride of a drug binge. "For a moment I lose myself, wrapped up in the pleasures of the world." That is why he is so bombed out and wandering the streets with his collar pulled up. His money has all gone to getting high. His possessions have been converted into drugs as well. He is homeless. In this frequently occurring condition, he has traveled all over the place like many an addict-vagabond. He runs across the same old friends in the same old haunts, part of an itinerant army of drug addicts and boozeheads that have been out there riding the rails since there were rails to ride. His mind is wallowing in the raw damage a heavy acid trip might reasonably be expected to dovetail into. The residual beauty of his revelatory trip is streaming around his head in visions of swans toppling to the earth as he comes down. He states that his mental anguish feels like the Earth is laughing at him as he commits the thought-crime of blasphemy against the Holy Bible (Freemasonry teaches karma, reincarnation and the impersonality of 'God'. These doctrines are heresy to 'Christians', whether you are talking about modern evangelists or the medieval Catholic Church.) So all he has to do is get through this rough spot in the trip and then tomorrow, which is "just an excuse away" he will be 'eating supper on a table in a home.' This home is heaven. That is why it can last forever. Love is the highest level in all consciousness. It is the highest vibrational frequency. It is all-encompasing. It is the inevitable destination of each individual soul, when we are wrapped back into the eternal for all eternity. If you disagree, just wait until you die and suddenly wake up to confront these facts all over again, just like you always do, every time you die. If you would like to pierce this shell while still breathing, drop some dose. Finally, the poetic use of the symbol of swans toppling to the Earth is also a complex reference to spiritually advanced personalities commonly known as avatars i.e.: those who descend. Toppling out of Heaven to the Earth is the process of leaving Heaven to incarnate as a person on this planet. In mysticism, swans tend to symbolize people who are not trapped in this cycle of reincarnation but who choose to incarnate so as to help those who are. Billy fancies himself to be one of these spiritually elite beings and who is to say that he is not? Well, that's what I think. Great darn song though!!!!!!!!!

The Smashing Pumpkins – Drown Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about two soul mates who have had a hard time of it in this life. No matter what happens or how much distance separates them, they are deeply connected on many levels. This bond cannot be broken, though at times in life it gets stretched pretty thin. Sometimes they mistreat each other. The past is full of pain from these episodes. But in the end, the only thing that matters - that will ever matter - that can ever matter - is that they love each other.
That's what I think.

Led Zeppelin – Good Times Bad Times Lyrics 17 years ago
The the cool thing to think about regarding this song is that it is track one on their first album. I love the idea of the people of the world discovering Led Zeppelin for the first time by buying the record and dropping it on the old turntable and setting the needle to the beginning. The opening few seconds must have really turned some heads back the old days.

Jane's Addiction – Ted, Just Admit It... Lyrics 17 years ago
This song expresses in somewhat sublime terms the causal and otherwise intractable link between the instinct to fuck and the instinct to kill. They are, evolutionary-wise, very close in terms of their practical application to the battle for survival and the race to pass on one's genes. Look at wolves in their natural social setting....

Jane's Addiction – Ocean Size Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm old enough to remember this song when it was first released. I loved these guys in the late 80's. This is the best track on the album. The song is about being kicked around and forced to keep moving in this autocratic economy that is designed to keep us sleeping at night and rising early and getting up out of our beds to go out and conduct meaningless business by performing meaningless work. Being 'Ocean Size' means being immovable and allowed to laze in the sun like the surf bums Perry hung with back then.

Marilyn Manson – Lunchbox Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the kind of song that get's guys like good old Marilyn Manson in 'trouble' in the media. It is an irresponsible promotion of school violence and I happen to love it. My best friend Kyle Gadhue commited suicide last year and this song was on a Manson mix CD he had burned for his own collection. I grabbed it when his girlfriend said I could have some of his stuff to remember him by. I had always listened to certain Manson songs on Burlington, Vermont radio station 99.9 THE BUZZ but I had never owned his albums, so I had never heard this song before finding it in my dead friend's collection. I think it is my favorite Manson song. I never knew about the metal lunchbox as a weapon thing so I am glad I read the prior entries on this site for this song. I always thought it was about Columbine High School but maybe I have it backwards and the Columbine High School attack was about this song! Life imitating art imitating life....

Paul Simon – Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is actually inspired by a single photograph. The photo is an old, small, black and white image of surrealist painter Rene Margritte with his wife Georgette and their dog. The caption hand written on the back of the photo reads, "Rene and Georgette Margritte with their dog after the war." If you Google Image Search you can be looking at this obscure and innocuous photo in a matter of seconds. You can also look at the paintings of Rene Margritte, which are exceeded in their strangeness only by that other more-famous surrealist, Salvadore Dali. Why Paul Simon would write this song is anyone's money, and to debate the meaning would be like arguing about the meaning of a Margritte painting. I personally believe Paul Simon is romanticizing the love between two people that survives world wars and poverty....and success.

Silverchair – Tomorrow Lyrics 18 years ago
First and foremost, as the years have gone by, this song has remained one of those one-hit favorites of mine. I always enjoy listening to this song and I attribute that to the nice guitar work and excellent vocal engineering they pulled off in the studio. However, in terms of meaning, I feel that the lyrics drift back and forth from almost saying something to almost saying nothing of any importance whatsoever. One must respect that the memebers of this band were thirteen and fourteen years old when they wrote and recorded this song. And one must concede that they sounded like shit whenever and wherever they played live. Trust me. They sucked live.

Swans – God Damn the Sun Lyrics 18 years ago
My best friend killed himself this past May. The summer had just begun and the events this unspeakable tragedy set in motion were something no one should ever be asked to live through. But live through it we did and when I began to write an account of what it was like in those summer months that followed I was drawn to the Swans 'God Damn the Sun' as a working title for my manuscript. I had never listened to this song and I just now did for the first time. I have chills down my spine. It is, in a word, BEAUTIFUL.

A Perfect Circle – Pet Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it is clear that Maynard wrote this song to his son in a cynical and satyrical idiom. But this song has special meaning for me. Back in May of this year (2005) my best friend Kyle shot and killed himself. At the time of his death he was going through a rocky relationship with a woman he had moved up here to central Maine (USA) with some year and a half earlier. After his death, she realized that he had moved here, hundreds of miles from her friends and family, to keep her isolated and all to himself. This summer has been very hard for all of us who knew Kyle, and one of the ways we have gotten by is by listening to A Perfect Circle's PET. It makes us sad to realize he was so selfish that he literally lived up to the lyrics of this rather sick song.

Swans – Children of God Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is one of the most beautiful, powerful, pure and Holy pieces of music ever written. The rhythm is bone-shaking and Jarboe's voice is angelic in the very definition of the term. I can sit and listen to this song over and over for hours. In a few lines of lyric poetry it says more about who we are than a hundred religious books can say in a hundred years. God Bless the Swans.

Queen – All Dead, All Dead Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is really beautiful and deserves to be played more. It is easily my favorite Queen song and, I think, it stands out above just about everything else they ever did. It is on NEWS OF THE WORLD and I can remember borrowing it from my middle school library when I was a kid and being stunned by the sad beauty of this track. Whoever the song is actually about, I think it can be personalized by just about anyone who ever loved a girl or a woman who has since died. I am not a terribly sentimental person but this song really tugs at my soul.

Led Zeppelin – The Battle of Evermore Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to say that finding this site and reading about the meaning of Led Zeppelin's lyrics (especially that they are so filled with stale metaphors to Tolkien) has really diminished the mystical quality I always thought the music had. The whole Tolkien thing is so lame and worn out - and has been for years (way before those awful movies were manufactured.)

Franz Ferdinand – Jacqueline Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is pretty cool as far as light pop music goes. I'm not sure it has a deep underlying meaning, though I am sure its creator has some personal investment in the theme. It seems straightforward to me.
I love the line, 'I'm so drunk I don't mind if you kill me'
Been there, felt that, said that, done that....
