Golden Earring – Radar Love Lyrics | 8 years ago |
This song is definitely about amphetamines among other things. "Gear" is biker code for speed (another is crank) and "shifting gear" seems to refer to smuggling speed. Another poster is correct that "brenda lee" is west coast slang for cocaine but it also used to refer to amp and I'm pretty sure that's what the song is talking about, a trucker or possibly a smuggler running speed. The connection with truck stop hookers may also be correct as well. |
Boston – Peace of Mind Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I have to let the haters know something about song lyrics. Sometimes, what's printed on lyric sheets isn't what the singer is singing. Sometimes they sing things that sound intentionally ambiguous-- this is known as slur masking. Many other Boston songs contain overt marijuana lyrics. Whether I'm right or wrong about that specific lyric I stand by my opinion of this song. Truly the first Boston album was one of the best ever released in the opinion of critics as well as the buying public. Consider this: An album recorded in a basement studio by an unknown band is still in heavy rotation on numerous radio stations ALMOST FORTY YEARS LATER. |
Billy Idol – White Wedding Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Seems pretty clear to me this song is about heroin. Shotgun is a reference to withdrawing the plunger to suck blood into the syringe, then shooting. Like so many songs, it has a double meaning about heroin and women. That's it, pretty much case closed. |
Boston – Foreplay/Long Time Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's interesting that for such a happy summer evening party band, how many of Boston's songs are about death and loss, but phrased in such a positive way. |
Boston – Peace of Mind Lyrics | 13 years ago |
"But I don't care if I get me high" and "All that I want is to have my peace of my high." Everyone in the know knows Boston is a total marijuana band. It's the best thing ever for putting on headphones and toking up in a park or out in the country by a river on a sunny summer afternoon. I always thought this song was about the view a marijuana smoker has of the stressful and competitive and pointless society at large. As a long-standing marijuana smoker (25 years on and off) I have to agree. I look back on my life and the financial rewards I could have had, and then I look at the rat race it would have taken to get there-- and then I consider the aimless dreamer's life I've led, I wouldn't have it any other way. |
Blue Öyster Cult – Burnin' For You Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It bears mentioning that BOC have been on tour pretty much steadily since the late 1970s. They never stop touring. Home on the Highway indeed. From what I hear it's the real high way. |
Metallica – The Small Hours (Holocaust cover) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is about the return of the Great Old Ones. >Just call my name and I'll be there >You cannot touch me, you would not dare >I am the chill that's in the air Clear reference to demon summoning. An air god, one of horrible aspect who arrives at the sound of his name. >And I try to get through to you, in my own special way This is a reference to dream-sendings, or other occult vibrations, contacting the mentally unstable in order to convert them into worshipers. >As the barriers crumble at the end of the day Refers to the crumbling barriers between the dimensions of men and those inhabited by demons. >You are the fish for which I cast This is a clear religious reference. The mad liar jesus supposedly called himself "the fisher of men." >Dark rivers are flowing back into the past >As the rivers flow into the sea More water references. Is the song referring to a water demon, one who lives underwater? Who could this be? Think about songs on RTL... >Don't step into the demon's lair >Time is an illusion, rising from time >Steep is the mountain which we climb Reference to underground locations, then to a mountain. Is the mountain Hatheg Kla? |
Slayer – Richard Hung Himself (D.I. cover) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
If you think Slayer have anything positive to say about religion you're really barking up the wrong tree with that and you should maybe try Amy Grant or Vengeance Rising or some bullshit like that. In this case they're just playing the cover like it was written. Don't expect punk bands to be the least bit consistent or coherent, ever. This song is about someone who went crazy from an addiction to religion, and then turned to heroin. These lines "Burning acid bath Pulmonary wrath Feel the boiling surge It won't let you go" are about heroin withdrawal. Sounds like he might also have been a murderer. Who the hell knows. This had to have been an Araya pick, he's always been all about serial killers, murderers and other filth. |
Blue Öyster Cult – Burnin' For You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think this song is about partying for the Devil. The rock and roll lifestyle, and marijuana. It seems to be that it's advocating marijuana over hard drugs (suns that were freezing lives that were through) but that there's no reason to put up a fight because his lifestyle is a waste so he might as well get stoned all the time. He's seen lives that were free, but he's smoking, taking a drink to the Devil so to speak. Hail Buck Dharma! Hail Satan! |
Loverboy – Working For The Weekend Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Also, people may not understand how gigantic these guys were up until about 1987 or so. MASSIVELY HUGE. Then all of a sudden you never heard from them ever again, like someone flipped a switch. All of a sudden red latex pants weren't cool anymore. |
Loverboy – Working For The Weekend Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This song is about a coke dealer. Loverboy were a HUGE coke band. Most of the 80s bands were because that was what was going on in the 80s music industry and all the "cool" scenes. Just check out their lyrics to their song "Jump," the title itself being a coke reference: Was it your idea to meet me like this Sneakin’ round with the lights down low? It feels so good I hope it doesn’t fade away But if they catch us here together this way You know we better think quick Cuz you bet you’re last buck They’ll be first to get the last lick When I say Jump You better jump When I say walk You better get ready to say good bye Now you can’t always get what you want when you want it So you settle for second best You need it so bad Don’t matter what price you pay When you lay it on the line takin’ chances like this One slip could do the trick Cuz you bet you’re last buck They’ll be first to get the last lick When I say Jump You better jump When I say walk You better get ready to say good bye And when I look at you now Somehow it don’t seem right But it feels so good tonight |
Entombed – Left Hand Path Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Agreed that this is one of the best death metal albums ever made. I think Clandestine is better than this one but this song tops anything on there. |
Creedence Clearwater Revival – Lookin' Out My Back Door Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Keep in mind that a spoon is a type of marijuana pipe. Other than the possibility that it was a coke spoon-- and keep in mind also that coke wasn't big at all until the 1970s-- it sounds much more like someone settling in to smoke a bowl. |
Fates Warning – The Apparition Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Yes it IS awesome. Reason nobody commented on it is because it's obscure-- they were obscure even after their comparative success in the post-Arch era. For about 2 months, then they slid back into obscurity. Hard to say what this song is about, the lyrics speak for themselves. "When the stars are right and you're alone..." Early Fates lyrics are steeped in occult symbolism. |
Def Leppard – Foolin' Lyrics | 15 years ago |
no, pretty sure it's "realized that long ago." |
Def Leppard – Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Yet another song that could very well be a drug reference. Mirrors are coke paraphernalia. "Line by line" could refer to snorting lines. This song always struck me as being about someone who was looking at himself in the mirror after blowing lines off of it, and being ashamed of the shambles of his life. Def Leppard lyrics are surprisingly deep with meaning. |
Def Leppard – Rock Of Ages Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This song is about two things: rock&roll and getting stoned. Burn out. "Start a fire" is a term for lighting a joint. Rolling, keep rolling (joints). Burnin, burnin, I got the fever! Gimme one more for the road! Clear references to the Green Manalishi with the Two-Pronged Crown. Gotta love Def Leppard, they're amazing, and quite dark for what they are. |
Great White – Face The Day Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This always sounded to me like someone waking up after a coke binge and having to go to work. "Daggers of dawn" and "hold back the light from my eyes" are the reason cokeheads wear sunglasses. "Great White" indeed. Ah, the 80s. |
Elvin Bishop – Fooled Around And Fell In Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This is such a cliche, but this song always sounded to me like it's about heroin addiction. Not just because of the whacked-out, flanger-dripping sound. He was with many girls and didn't love any of them, but then he found heroin which he loves more than any woman. In rock music, love for a girl is often a metaphor for addiction to hard drugs. You hear it all through Led Zeppelin, for instance: "I can't quit you, but I'm going to have to put you down for a while." I think it's true here as well. The life of a rock musician or bluesman is a self-destructive one. A friend was a bluesman in Texas. He died alone in a hotel room at 34 years of age. |
The Byrds – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is about an acid dealer in late 60s Berkeley. The narrator is numb and has the dumbs, fried from last night's trip. "Evening's empire" refers to last night's hallucinations. He's come down, mostly, but is still strung out and can't sleep. But it was a great trip. A fantastic trip. He's maybe never had such a heavy acid trip, but his mind is blown, he's astounded by the possibilities and the brilliant glory of LSD. He's burned out. He can't sleep, his body and brain are numb, he's walking funny and everything seems gray and dead. But he's ready to do it again. The second layer of meaning of this song is about the crazy, freewheeling sensation of the 1960s. The possibilities seemed limitless. And they still are limitless. The Big Lie is that they ever went away. Hippie culture is still around if you look. It's one of the few functioning, healthy communities left. |
Golden Earring – Radar Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The driver/narrator is suffering from amphetamine psychosis. He's just re-upped his dose and driving at dawn. He's imagining a telepathic connection with his lover, and driving fast, fast... I think Dubious Merit has it here. The dead lover angle is truly obscure. Here are some lyrics by Brenda Lee: "Comin' on strong, Comin' on strong. I can feel the heartaches Comin' on strong. I can feel the teardrops, the pain, and the sorrow Ever since you've been gone, they' been Comin' on strong." In this song, Brenda Lee might also be a euphemism for benzedrine, an amphetamine. |
Golden Earring – Twilight Zone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I agree with the idea that this is about espionage in Turkey. I'd never thought about that angle before, I always thought it had to do with drugs and organized crime, but the "Moon and Star" line seals it for me. "Feels like being cloned" may be insinuating that someone has posed as him, moved his radio beacon and intercepted his connection. Now the secret police are looking for him... |
Grateful Dead – Mountains Of The Moon Lyrics | 17 years ago |
no, "fairly sybil flying" should be "fairy sybil flying." Then it makes sense with the rest of the song... a sybil is a flag. |
Cannibal Corpse – The Time To Kill Is Now Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is about the war in the Middle East, from the perspective of the Mujahideen. The US went there full of pride and hubris, with superior weapons, but we're getting our heads handed to us. Kind of strange because I figured CC for righties. |
The Cars – Good Times Roll Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I always thought this song was about drugs. It has a real pot smoking vibe... Also, just about letting the good times take you away and not thinking too much about tomorrow. |
Rainbow – Man On The Silver Mountain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Sounds to me like Lucifer Satan |
Marilyn Manson – The Speed Of Pain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song's about crystal meth AND a bad relationship... People who haven't experienced the depression possible from meth have no idea. Sometimes the comedown is just fine, but you're so emotionally fragile, and if something bad happens the pain is just crushing. And you can't sleep to get away from it, you're forced to just lie there like a burned out shell of a person. |
Led Zeppelin – Achilles Last Stand Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Haven't heard mars volta. I agree that this song is amazing. It's kind of understandable that more obscure than Stairway, because of the complexity of the lyrics and song structure. |
Led Zeppelin – Achilles Last Stand Lyrics | 18 years ago |
There's something else going on in this song, I think, kind of a hidden meaning. Not going to say what it is... but if you know anything about Robert Plant, and about Achilles and Patroclus, you might catch on to what I mean. This is IMO the best Zep song. |
Abigor – Pandora's Miasmic Breath Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is about the coming plague. Black metal is about the death of humanity. This song is utterly sick. One of the best Abigor tunes. |
Black Sabbath – Snowblind Lyrics | 18 years ago |
iamtheowl: Been around a lot of cokeheads? The term "snowblind" has been used since the early 70s to mean someone who's wasted on coca. The usage didn't originate with sabbath. |
Black Sabbath – Symptom of the Universe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Mother MOON she's calling me." Sometimes the lyrics they put in these things make me laugh. |
Black Sabbath – Sabbra Cadabra Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Sounds to me like it might be about drugs. A lot of Sabbath songs have double meanings, especially the ones about women (The Warning is another good example.) Similar in some ways to Led Zeppelin's "I can't quit you." Is it about a woman or heroin? Which one is worse? |
Black Sabbath – War Pigs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Kind of interesting how the chorus of bush apologists has largely become silent since 2002. This song is about people like Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool. |
Black Sabbath – Megalomania Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's "The joke is on me," not "the joke is so mean." Sheesh. This sounds to me, like usual with Sabbath, like the song is about aftereffects of a drug binge. And also Ozzy's mixed feelings at his new found celebrity. I think he was no longer living in hotels by this time but when this album was recorded they were doing maaaaaad coke, acid et cetera. |
Metallica – The Memory Remains (feat. Marianne Faithfull) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I've always thought this song was about Dave Mustaine, who got kicked out due to excessive use of cocaine... I think "mirror vain" refers to the egotism induced by coke. Dave Mustaine ended up getting famous with Megadeth, but in 40 years nobody will remember him, and Metallica will never be forgotten. |
Entombed – Through The Collonades Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Many of the Entombed lyrics are Masonic in subject matter... talking 'bout the Illuminati, collonades (Masonic architecture.) The insane watching eye may well refer to the Pyramid Eye. |
Slayer – Raining Blood Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I saw this song live in 1986 for Reign in Blood tour, then numerous times 87-93. Slayer is the best metal band that ever was. This song is about the Fallen Angel Lucifer and His coming reign on earth, which has already begun. Hail to Slayer! Hail to Typhon Set, Satan Set Lucifer! |
