The Early November – Decoration Lyrics 18 years ago
If you listen to The Path you'll realize this song isn't literally about money; it’s about the boy not knowing that his "parents" are really his grandparents and that his "aunt and uncle" are his real parents. Ace just used money and material items as a metaphor for the situation in the story of The Path.

I think the band intended for listeners to assume that this song is about money by putting the electric, heavy version at the beginning of the triple disc. I think they wanted us to realize that the song was more about the boy in the story after listening to the 2nd version.

Its place on the Path fits with the idea that the song is about the boys parents/grandparents/aunt and uncles' true identities.

The reason why the 2nd version only includes the 1st verse, I think, is because that verse is enough to explain that part of the story. The 2nd verse just reinforces the metaphor of the 1st verse.

You might think this whole idea doesn't make sense but i think if you listen to The Path all the way through it makes perfect sense. Session 04 explains the metaphor in Decoration through the conversation between the main character and his "therapist".
