Elliott Smith – Between the Bars Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about Elliott's conflicting desires in life, and how he feels caught in the middle of a bunch of different personalities and goals without being able to decide what he really wants. The song is told from the perspective of alcohol, talking to him and telling him that drinking away his problems is the answer.

Almost all of his songs are talking about him in the third person, focusing on his actions that stem from his insecurity in life.

Also, I'd like to add that it's only the verses that don't make sense which seem to have satanic messages when played backwards. If you go along with the theory that forwards the song is about the stairway to heaven and backwards the song is about the stairway to hell, then you can believe this:

What doesn't make sense forwards, makes sense backwards. The verses without supposed satanic messages seem to all hint at listening to the song backwards. "Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings"; "Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven".

The line "And if you listen very hard the tune will come to you at last when all are one and one is all" seems to mean when everything comes together, i.e. when you take into account both the forwards and backwards messages of the song, the true meaning will come to you and reveal itself.

Keep in mind that none of the quotes in this post make sense backwards; they're all simply hinting to a great meaning, or two different lives of the song.

Before you try to say anything about the backwards messages, load the song into Windows Sound Recorder and play it backwards. I have two timestamped transcriptions:

FORWARD [4:20 - 4:40]:
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, it's just a spring clean for the May Queen. Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run there's still time to change the road you're on.

REVERSE [2:40 - 3:00]:
here's to my sweet satan. the one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is satan. he'll give those with him 666. there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad satan.

-------------------

FORWARD [2:20 - 3:50]:
Woe oooooh, and it makes me wonder. Oh, it makes me wonder. There's a feeling I get when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees and the voices of those who stand looking. Woe oooooh, and it makes me wonder. It really makes me wonder. And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune, the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn for those who stand long and the forest will echo with laughter.

REVERSE [3:20 - 5:00]:
if i only would say, "lord stay off of me" the one that took us would be a queen to me. if you say, "lord get off of me," we'll lose the lord if we all forever stay away. but no one's getting loose, and no one's getting loose. but at twelve o'clock say "stay off of me" and you should lose who walks at your knees. now hear, stay off of me. if you lift me i'll take you into me, i say i won't lose or run away. he'll help me if i say it. and no one's getting loose, and no one's getting loose.
