I realize that I am replying to a two year old posting, but still felt that I could not let your comment stand unquestioned. It seems apparent from your comment that you genuinely liked the song before the addition of Jay-z and I'm wondering whether this might explain your prejudice against the technical and lyrical aspects of the addition of Jay-z. You boast that his lyrics could have been written better by yourselves as well as referring to his flow in this particular tune as being subpar. I have to disagree strongly. I accept that tastes are different and the discussion of music will always rest firmly atop a foundation of preferences and subjectiveness, however I feel you take it further than just that. You argue that the song was more powerful without Jay, that the only reason it is generally accepted is his mainstream fame and that he normally is better than here. I would as a Jay-z listener through many years kindly disagree. I think he shows his versatility perfectly by picking up on a slow synthesized piano beat, adapting his style to that of the song. His verse is well written and flows extremely well. The lyrical aspect can always be discussed - I will contend that the verse is too short. As a fan of rap and hip hop as well as many other genres I am left longing for more. This became somewhat the size of a small university essay, however I felt your comment cried out for someone to provide another point of view ;) |

How you spend the night, when the relationship is already over. Love how he uses the "ghosts" reference and then ending the song in such an epic way with: "Always wake up alone". |

Well... can't describe how great i think this song is. It's the exact words on how i am feeling now. That feeling where you sick and tired of being in love with a person who doesn't feel the same. It's a decesion so hard to take - to say goodbye. That small hope that et will develop into something - but then again realizing that you have to let it go and surrender your self to a beautiful stranger... Maybee it doens't mean that.. but that is what it means to me :) |
