Great song - been looping it for days! I think it's about someone's personal goal, something they just want to accomplish in life but it keeps getting put aside for various reasons.
There's so much pressure to get this done ("dont breathe down my neck, no"), yet you still sometimes want to forget about it and just have fun for a bit. It even seems like the goal is unneccesary when she is singing "I could ignore you / Your demands are unending / I got no tears on my ice cream but you know me / I love pretending". It's the pull between wanting something badly and lacking ambition to get it. |

Saw Fiona at Central Park Summerstage this past summer and was so excited that she performed this song! Before that, she prefaced it by saying that she had one of her high school crushes in mind when writing it - this puts the song into a totally different context. Sexy and sultry, yet it's about an innocent crush - sort of like "please notice me...you'll be sorry if you don't!" |

For some reason after listening to this song a few times, I get the impression that it's not just a friend she's talking about, but maybe a friend with benefits. Although it may have started out as a no strings attached deal, she seems to be getting attached ("It's the ribbons I tied") - especially because she's "fickle and vain" and he "tricks her over and over again" into thinking that it's something more serious.
So I think the whole song is just her being torn on whether to stick around with this type of relationship or let him go ("I would rather just die go to hell and crawl back than let you go"). |

Just one little addition to the whole "doing her man wrong theory": I think the wrongdoing in question is not really being bitchy, but rather, she's about to cheat on her man. Especially the lines "Save me from these evil deeds before I get them done / I know tomorrow brings the consequence at hand but I keep livin' this day like the next will never come" It sort of makes me think that there's been this ongoing flirtation between her and another guy and she's getting so close to actually sealing the deal but is torn between feeling guilty for cheating and just giving in to the temptation. |
