Zao – A Last Time For Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
the album's "killing time until it's time to die" deals with perverse motivations behind euthanasia and suicide in our modern, medically dominated culture. "we were born into this curse," i.e. our lives are woven together with tragedy and so therefore, you can't do anything to solve the situation. "there are no controls..." The Fear is a social album, emphasizing especially the modern dependence on technology for security, even spiritual security. That's what the "great strings" are. They are the technologies by which we attempt to control our fates. To sever them is to yield up a vulnerable existence to some transcendent power. The fear of that vulnerability is the very thing that prevents us to destroying ourselves in suicide, in war, in euthanasia. The so-called "culture of death" is a culture of insecurity, of incompatibility with basic human existence. Greek Mythology names the three sister-Fates as the beings that determine the times of our birth, the length of our life, and the time of our death. Our lives are strings, handmade by their care. That's why "time stops for one but not for another" but "in time we all cross-over". Divinity can weave a pattern from our lives if we are willing, willing to sever the strings that we make ourselves, in a futile attempt to keep what will not keep.

Dashboard Confessional – If You Can't Leave It Be, Might as Well Make It Bleed Lyrics 19 years ago
sometimes we can use FATALISM as an excuse for our problems. "It's sad, because i was born this way. I had no choice in the matter". Not so fast: there's something better wrong with you.

Dashboard Confessional – If You Can't Leave It Be, Might as Well Make It Bleed Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey guys, great posts.
I think that the cutting is a great literal interpretation. But isn't cutting a symbol in addition to a reality? Symbolically, this song is about how people deal with the discovery of their own faults. When one of your own failures or shortcomings is brought to your attention, (even though you subconsciously knew about it all along) you have a few options. One is to humbly confess your problem and ask friends for help. This approach presupposes that your problem is a behavioral one that can be changed, and does not define who you are as a person. But this approach is a rare one, because people are prideful, they do not like this path, and prefer to identify with their problems and make them physical, or imagine that their problems lie deep inside themselves like a physical entity or disease, requiring surgery for removal. No one blames a person for getting a tumor and needing surgery. This surgery, body-approach to fault-fixing is easier than the first approach. But it is at once sadder and more prideful. If there is something better wrong with us, then it doesn't require physical surgery-removal, and it's probably spiritual.

To get to the good news (removal of fault-problem) you have to go through the bad news. And that's confessing that your problem is spiritual, moral, or normative. And not medical. It means admitting that it's not "Just you", and that is was, in a way, your fault. This is painful but it's the real way out of the problem.

One might object to this interpretation: discovery of your own faults is not part of the self-inflicted cutting, and it's all about depression and anger. Well, i think that depression and fault-discovery are connected, because both are focused on the self: when we discover our sin, we are tempted to wallow in it and deny the possibility of being saved from it. This denial is itself selfish, and over-time, this guilt can become part of us, even to the point that we prefer self-destruction to confession and salvation, a way out of the mess.

THIS SONG IS ABOUT: a certain type of christian that trie to get every word out of every word in the bible they read, tries to be as perfect as they can without being true to themselves, true to their heart, and honest about their faults, shortcomings, etc.

A BIG PROBLEM with christians today is that there are very few great christian artists. christians have the most potential for being great artists because they understand classical human nature, classical truths, classical everything. they have a good grip on truth. but so many christians are literalists, and don't incorporate the gray areas of feeling, emotion, interpretation, etc. into their faith and their reading of the bible.

The christian life is a romance, it is not all reason, and it is a romantic relationship with god, and dustin feels that this is a better way to see and know the truth. And it is.

SUMMARY: this song is about two problems in modern medicine: doing too much, (putting our faith in technology rather than our creator) and euthanasia, which is a copout, which is giving up when our technology can't save us.

Hey guys, great posts. let me help you out. At the warped tour i asked dustin about this song. he said it's about "THE LIMITS OF HUMAN KNOWLEDGE."

Modern hospital ethics does not respect the limits of human knowledge. It is becoming more and more prideful. For example, instead of just letting a person die, we put them through incredibly painful and drawn-out treatment plans. we think that being at peace about a patient's death would be sinful and not respecting human life enough.

the first thing doctors should think about is "FIRST, DO NO HARM."
but paradoxically, we simultaneously disrespect human life by thinking that technology will save us. And when technology can't save us, we euthanize ourselves so that we won't have to live with pain. Medicine is taking the role of God, trying to prolong people's lives beyond the natural limits, and when it can't, using technology to kill them, and us. Can we kill each other quickly? so we won't feel it?

Thrice – Silhouette Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey guys, great posts. Here's some help:

This song is about how the eyes of a girl represent to him the eyes of God. The most obvious nature of God is holiness. And if you haven't noticed already, many thrice songs express the idea of HOLINESS BEING DANGEROUS. holiness is a force that refines, that cuts at you, that radiates into you and through you, that sacrifices the bad parts of you and kills them. It tests you, tests your will, looks deeply into you for imperfections and helps you see yourself as what you are: a sinner who doesn't deserve eternally life, because anything that is impure cannot live forever. That is obvious in chemistry, and physics, and in the Greek philosophical Platonic ideas of perfect "forms" that were faultless versions of earthly realities.

The eyes come at him speaking in tongues, burning in fire yet not burning itself, like the bush moses encountered. filled with the spirit, consuming him, hurting him, etc. "help me draw the dagger deeper" from IC means, help kill my impure nature and crucify it on the cross with Jesus. you have to understand the bible to understand these lyrics. HOLINESS HURTS. you stare at it too long and you will go blind, you will crack your teeth on pearls on its wisdom, you will take calculated risks (danger) to bless his name, you will smash your fists in mirrors trying to search for it. The eyes rest in flame and look at him, piercing his soul.

whenever you deal with God's holiness you will get hurt. its scary. but he also will heal you. he'll strike you deep and true but then you'll have new life later. its like surgery.

Thrice – Don't Tell And We Won't Ask Lyrics 19 years ago
TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE IN THIS WORLD YOU HAVE TO KILL LESSER HUMANS. TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE FROM FAMILY, LOVE, AND BABIES, YOU HAVE TO KILL THE BABIES EVERY TIME THEY POP UP. THE SMART KID NEVER WORKS WITHOUT HIS GLOVES, MEANS, A SMART TEENAGE BOY WHO HAS FIGURED OUT THAT HE CAN USE A CONDOM (A PENIS-GLOVE) EVERY TIME HE HAS SEX AND THAT WILL KEEP HIM SAFE FROM BABIES AND FAMILY, AND LOVE. ABORTION IS A CORPORATE INDUSTRY, DRAWING 400 million $ EVERY YEAR.

SOMETIMES, AMERICANS FEEL UNSAFE FROM OTHER COUNTRIES AND HAVE TO KILL SOME PEOPLE TO FEEL MORE SAFE. THE PEOPLE WHO DIED IN THE WAR ARE LESSER HUMANS BECAUSE THEY WERE NECESSARY TO MAINTAIN OUR SAFE, HEDONISTIC AMERICAN EXISTENCE.

Thrice – Motion Isn't Meaning Lyrics 19 years ago
THOSE WHO ARE EMPHATICALLY ANTI-WAR ARE PROBABLY HIDING THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE DEEPER PROBLEMS IN THEIR OWN PERSONAL LIVES UNRESOLVED BY THEIR ENTHUSIASTIC-PRETENDING AS THOUGH THEY HAVE ANSWER-ALL VIEWS. THEIR IDEOLOGICAL ENEMIES MAKE A MISTAKE, AND THEY USE IT AS AN EXCUSE TO PRETEND AS THOUGH THEY HAVE A FULFILLING, SELF_CONSISTENT WORLDVIEW. THEY DO NOT.

Thrice – The Abolition Of Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey guys, good posts.
the knife in the back thing is a reference to Caesar. Julius C. laughed at honor and payed the price for it. So will we, if our society gives up objective morality, and starts actually believing in utillitarianism, which says that men create their own morality for their own use. i.e., we create a compass for the next society to follow. "look in my eyes, you won't find your way back": this refers to the nature of a person without any objective groundwork or foundation. you get lost in them, they are not coherent themselves, there is no unifying aspect of their nature, they are empty. Lewis calls them "MEN WITHOUT CHESTS". he says the head rules the belly through the chest, and when you take away the chest (objective morality) the head starts to get controlled by the belly. things get bad.

natural law is written on our hearts. god made mother nature, and he made her with natural laws written on the hearts of human beings. such is the nature of objective morality, that appears in all the religions and moral systems of the world. But man rejects tradition and tries his own thing. For instance, we reject traditional views of sex and invent condoms and all sorts of birth control, and start to teach the next generation in public schools that the traditional view of sex is not objective, and we tell them what we feel is a better view of sex, that you can have it as a teenager as long as you "never work without your gloves." thus, science creates a way for one society to govern the behavior of the next, using technology (birth control and abortion, genetic programming, etc.) to achieve this end.

Thrice – That Hideous Strength Lyrics 19 years ago
The Bible verse is in ISAIAH. search at biblegateway.com.

This song is about modern relativism. Nowadays if you believe in objective truth, you feel as though your opinion is reduced and deobjectified all the time. What does that feel like? For instance, you might believe that Jesus Christ is still alive, healing your wounds and encouraging you and calming your fears and making you into a better human. In order for these things to be true for you, they have to be true for all mankind as well. Otherwise it would not help your life so profoundly. Modern relativism is a SUFFOCATING FORCE in our lives today. It is like "shotguns and silence", or it makes claims about all truths at once, and then silences any conversation as to which truth is the best or most true. Yet we all have human problems and scars from life, and we are all desperately mortal. So we should be talking about it! But we don't. Switchfoot says, "one world one desperation, one hope and one salvation". In a world with so much relativism, we are lost without the objective PERSON whose mind holds all of the truth, and who is Truth and Life itself. There is a solution to our problems, and thank goodness it did not come from our own minds, but rather through revelation. Amen.
