Howard Jones – Everlasting Love Lyrics | 15 years ago |
lanakael: Absolutely, 100% agree. Like the singer, I also couldn't care less about one night stands or scoring or glorious body parts... or any of that empty stuff. I want a woman who's soul I understand and admire. For me to say looks don't matter at all wouldn't be true, but it matters far, far less than her personality. |
Devo – Girl U Want Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I take the song to mean that every guy puts the girl he likes on some pedestal and pines about how wonderful she is, but to the rest of the world she's not so special, hence she's "just the girl, the girl you want". Of course she's special in your eyes, because you want her so bad, but you're not able to see reality. You're seeing your fantasy come true, etc. I don't know... |
The Magnetic Fields – All The Umbrellas In London Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Such genius. I had already heard, maybe, 30 songs from Stephin Merritt that I considered brilliant and THEN I heard this one. One of his best. For me it's about the absolutely life-crushing misery when a hurt is fresh and still bleeding, but knowing on some intellectual level that it won't hurt as much over time and trying to take whatever lessons (his realizing his sense of perfection in relationships is probably not realistic) or whatever good (hey, it'll make a good song at least) he can from the experience. |
The Magnetic Fields – Let's Pretend We're Bunny Rabbits Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Hahaha, he's basically saying, in a Disney way, "Let's fuck til we die!" Genius. |
The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The real "LOL" is at the elitist who think they're cool for having heard this song well before Lost in Translation used it and berate those who haven't. If these recent fans aren't causing trouble, just shut up and let them enjoy the song and speak (briefly) about how it relates to the movie. Get a grip, some of you. |
The Magnetic Fields – It's Only Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I also love how the song picks up at the "marry me" point... that's when we hear drums for the first time in the song, if I remember. What a clever way to change up the song and punctuate the emotion, just like how a great movie soundtrack does to a scene. Greatest songwriter working today. |
Colbie Caillat – Bubbly Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I DESPISE the lyrics from this song. The lines are either cliched, smarmy, or not really saying anything meaningful. |
The Magnetic Fields – My Sentimental Melody Lyrics | 16 years ago |
He was right. This sentimental melody did bring a tear to many an eye. |
The Magnetic Fields – The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The sound is reminiscent of The Cars's song "Let's Go". It must be the violin and the hand claps. |
The Magnetic Fields – Promises Of Eternity Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Such a heartbreaking, beautiful song, especially the chorus. Simply one of his best. |
Shout Out Louds – Tonight I Have To Leave It Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Thanks for your input, blkshelbygt. It's good to know someone else saw it the same way. It's a really unique song. I don't know of any other musical artist that openly rejects "romance", as it's currently thought of, as being largely bullshit and that action is what counts. Usually we either have rappers chanting about booty, or Celine Dion singing about vague feelings. |
Shout Out Louds – Tonight I Have To Leave It Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Such a great song... I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. The song is about being repulsed by shallow love, carnal lust, etc. -- he just wants to share real love with someone mature enough to give it back. Not someone who "talks love", in poems or in dance clubs, but someone who can "give love". Furthermore, the title of the song is about finally recognizing that it's sometimes good to give up on a relationship when you can you already KNOW it's shaping up into something you don't want. Leave it! Don't torture yourself by listening to others advice to "stick it out" or your own self doubts. You know what you want, so you go and get it and accept nothing less. |
The Magnetic Fields – Swinging London Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sounds like a song about being in love with someone and then finding out they didn't love you as much. But is there anything more to it than that? The astronomy references? The strange "grok" jargon usage? |
Nickelback – Rockstar Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The lyrics to this song are actually pretty clever, but I still hate Nickelback's sound in general. |
Plain White T's – Hey There Delilah Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm surprised no one has mentioned who the REAL Delilah is. According to Wikipedia, it's a Columbia University student named DELILAH DICRESCENZO, who is a big time track star. She was never actually a girlfriend of the singer, and was just someone he met that inspired him enough to write a song about her. I'd love to meet this woman. She must be an all around awesome individual. |
Nick Drake – One Of These Things First Lyrics | 17 years ago |
dante23: Nick did not have many lovers. In fact, he barely had a girl"friend" acording to Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Drake He had awesome singing ability, but that did not translate into having many women as he was a painfully shy person, often recording his vocals facing the wall so the sound techs couldn't look at him. |
Gym Class Heroes – Cupid's Chokehold Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Has it occured to anyone that maybe they just used a catchy CHORUS without putting any thought into it beyond "oh, hey, they mentioned 'girlfriend' in it, so we'll use it"? And, by the way, "High Fidelity" sucked, This Charming Man. Maybe two moments of hilarity and no likable characters. |
Nick Drake – Cello Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Sintax, your interpretation is at least one step beyond my own. I was thinking it was simply a song about a person he admired, and loved romantically, but never felt he, nay, the world, was worthy of this sweet soul. |
The Magnetic Fields – Born on a Train Lyrics | 17 years ago |
sadeyedbaby: Then you better write that thesis, because right now your theory is looking like weak coffee. That whole album is about drifting, hence the title "The Charm of the Highway Strip". Even if you disregard that, explain what a VAMPIRE has to do with being BORN ON A TRAIN. Please... |
Erasure – A Little Respect Lyrics | 17 years ago |
From the 30 seconds I heard of the Wheatus version on Amazon, it doesn't sound bad at all. But the original is one of best vocals from all the 80s. It's challenging to sing and even more so when sung with such feeling and power as Erasure did. |
Gwen Stefani – Wind It Up Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I saw this performed on SNL last night and it just sounded awful. Maybe the original is a little better than the live version, but the song sounded amateurish, cheap, and embarrassing. |
Pizzicato Five – Baby Love Child Lyrics | 19 years ago |
These lyrics are either wrong or from a lesser known version of the song. I first heard this song on an episode of Futurama and simply had to find it. Anyway, the version I have goes like this: When I see you alone, I see what's in your mind. You love me yes you do, you don't need to tell me. I know you love me most, no one else take my place. You need me, yes you do. Forever, and ever. When we kiss, I see what's in your heart. You love me yes you do, you don't need to tell me. I know you love me most, no one else take my place. You need me, you do. Forever, and ever. We are in love, baby love child I take you so high, groovy love child Give me a kiss, baby love child Do it again Attention adults (x4) We are in bed at night, I can see what you want. You want me yes you do, "aishiteimasu." I know how you feel, you have all of my heart. I give you myself. Forever and ever. We are in love, baby love child I take you so high, groovy love child Give me a kiss, baby love child Do it again. Attention adults (x12) |
The Magnetic Fields – I Don't Want To Get Over You Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Stephen Merrit does it again. With the way he can set up a true-to-life scenario with few words and make you feel all the pain or elation he went experienced, I consider his songs bona fide poetry, right up there with the masters: Morrissey, Nick Drake, The Flaming Lips, and Neutral Milk Hotel. Just wonderful. |
New Order – Regret Lyrics | 19 years ago |
butterflykiss84: Actually, the title word "Regret" is mentioned in the third line of the song. But your fact would hold true for many of their other songs. |
Peter Murphy – Indigo Eyes Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Have no idea what this song is about... BUT it may have something to do with the Fall of Lucifer in Heaven, and God's indigo eye's watchihng it all happen. |
Morrissey – Hairdresser On Fire Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It's about how a hairdresser can make you feel so good when they make you look great, and the attraction that can happen between client and provider. Maybe in the same way that some women fall in love with their plastic surgeons. |
Morrissey – Lucky Lisp Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I have no idea what this song means. There seems to be religious ideas here: Saints, Jesus, omen... Any ideas?? |
The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think you're right, tom56. The hero of the tale FEELS this immense love, and it's real to that person, but the love probably is unrequited do to the line about him/her not being able to "ask" that other person that all-important question "in the darkened underpass". SORRY, BUT HERE'S A TRUE LIFE SIDEBAR: That special girl that I listened to this song with, as mentioned above, has just broken up with me. We had a great 4 months of sharing our souls and then she goes and falls in love with some dude in Israel. This song is now too painful for me to listen to because of all the memories of her. I don't want her back, because who needs a girl that would cheat on you, no matter how cool she was in every other aspect. But I do mourn the "what could've been". |
The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
But people cry for many reasons: sad, happy, in pain, in awe, fear, frustration. I was near tears when listening to this song because I thought it was beautiful. I was touched by the thought that some artist was able to express the feeling that death, the thing we're born to fear, is secondary to finding love in this world. And the character in the song found that love, or at least believed so, and thereby attained the highest goal possible. |
The Motels – Suddenly Last Summer Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A haunting, dreamy sounding song that reminds me of being a little kid in the '80s. |
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – So In Love Lyrics | 19 years ago |
What an agonizing break up song. The vocals are incredibly heartfelt and the bitter lyrics ("Don't phone me up", "Don't call around") perfectly capture the feelings when you realize your love has been lying to you. |
The Smiths – Bigmouth Strikes Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I've heard that the chipmunk vocals is not from a woman as credited in the liner notes, but is actually Morrissey's own altered voice. |
Tears for Fears – Change Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The song seems to be about how we can change both for better and for worse. Also, that even after a change, we can still change, yet again. However, there's no guarantee that when you change your partner is going to accept you back. They may "change" as well. Life is funny that way. This songs has such beautiful vocals. It stays with me. |
The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I've been a Smiths fan for a short while and yet I somehow never came across this song until lastnight, when a very special girl asked me to play it with her as we listened together over the internet. I was near tears after the second listen. The song HAS to be about true love, not a one night thing. He's talking about someone SO special that dying is actually less important than simply being with that person! |
Morrissey – Suedehead Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Interesting analysis, Kaguth. My thoughts were less specific; that the song was about a couple that broke up but keep running into each other, and how sad it is that things can never be the same, but at least the sex was good. That's life, ladies and gents. |
Barenaked Ladies – The Ballad of Gordon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I saw the PSA for this, back in 1992 and have been trying to find out who sang this ever since! I only remembered the last line of the song and was able to google it. It's corny, but cute. |
Depeche Mode – Any Second Now (Voices) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is one of DM's most haunting, and that's saying a lot! The song is very cryptic to me, but the general feeling I get from the song is that it's about that specific moment when one must decide whether to end a relationship or give it another chance. I hope someone else can chime in here and offer some insight... |
The Smiths – Ask Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Also, his line "Spending warm, Summer days indoors Writing frightening verse To a buck-toothed girl in Luxemburg" seems strangely PROPHETIC of how shy people will get into internet relationships with "buck-toothed", goofy looking nerds in far away places and have a long distance thing going. Moz seems to be saying this kind of thing is not productive and what the shy person should be doing is just come up to someone in person and just ASK them out, because there's a chance that other person wants to be asked and will say YES. Moz seems to be aiming the song at a shy person he's interested in, and is trying to give that person the hint that he won't bite. |
The Smiths – Ask Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Nice analysis, Alexbhlz. I agree 100% re: the bomb. As for the lyric "shyness is nice", it's both comforting AND a call to get off your ass to do something. See, shy people, like many of us, are usually nice sweet people, but that same shy sweetness means they will miss out on many of the JOYS of life because they are too busy being INDOORS and avoiding too much social contact. We should all strive to be both social AND still nice. An ideal world, really. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland, 1945 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
One of the most powerful songs of all time. The line "Now she's a little boy in Spain, playing pianos filled with flames" is the line that always moves me. Infact, when playing the song the first time, I wasn't really paying much attention AND THEN I heard that line out of nowhere and decided I had better start listening closer. I always took the song to be about WWII and anti-semitism, but I hadn't put two and two together that it was about ANNE FRANK. Thank you to everyone that pointed this out. |
Depeche Mode – But Not Tonight Lyrics | 19 years ago |
It reminds me of those magical nights when you're outside and you realize that life is just about you and the universe you're playing in, that the stars and the moon are billions of years old and all your life's problems of societal expectations, responsibility, anxiety, etc. are tiny in the grand scheme of things and you feel for a moment that a great weight has been lifted from your shoulders and that you are wiser than you were just 5 minutes earlier. |
Howard Jones – No One Is To Blame Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The wonderful chorus and guitar riff really make this song great. |
Gary Numan – Are 'Friends' Electric? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I worship that injection of HEAVY GUITARS placed during the breaks between choruses. Listen for it! You won't be sorry. |
Gary Numan – Cars Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the song is about the amazing freedom we feel when we get a car: we could live in it if we want, we can be alone in it, we can tune in the radio and get lost in the music, we can pick up girls and explore love, and ultimately we can just drive away to anywhere we feel like. |
Daniel Johnston – I Am a Baby (In My Universe) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Recorded on a tape player when the artist was 22, it's a song about the naivete of being young and thinking you'll never die, are invincible, and have all the time in the world. |
Daniel Johnston – She Called Pest Control Lyrics | 19 years ago |
The meaning seems pretty obvious. It's about a guy being in love with a girl that clearly doesn't want him. |
Built to Spill – Some Things Last a Long Time (Daniel Johnston cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is a cover of a Daniel Johnston song. |
Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I think the song is about a gay male and his best friend, also a gay male. They had a brief fling at one point in their history, but broke up due to whatever reasons and decided to just be friends again. That is, until the one day when they get back together. The singer then expresses both his euphoria and understandable apprehension at this development. However, the drug interpretation mentioned earlier also sounds plausible. I guess we'll have to ask DM personally. |
