yuck. this song blows. everything about it is so boring. i've loved interpol since turn on the bright lights, and pretty much every other song on antics is great, but this song fucking SUCKS. the guitar and bass lines are so repetitive, the lyrics are so immature. "You make me want to pick up a guitar And celebrate the myriad ways that I love you." UGH. how can anyone hear that line and not cringe. interpol is still a great band, take you on a cruise for example is fucking fantastic, but this song should've never left the cutting room. it's so obviously a mainstream-driven single, and it's so obviously inferior to their other work. it does sound like a franz ferdinand song, and that IS a bad thing. that means it sounds good the first time but sucks ass after 3 or more listens, just like franz ferdinand. so many people like it because they hear it on the radio and it's so accessible, and i hate them for it. but who i hate ever more is other hardcore interpol fans who will not fucking admit that this song sucks because they're such fanboys. interpol could make a Cher cover album and these assholes would be all over it. dammit i hate people, and i hate this song. go to hell Slow Hands |

how could anyone think things are going rather well for the narrator? are you kidding? he's obvoiusly depressed and in a total dead-end marriage that they can't get out of(they've hung on past the last exit). he hates himself and hates his wife, they're both drowning with no love at all between them anymore. he says "i hope you die, i hope we both die." how does that have any positive connotation? |

the first time i heard this i thought "this is good, but not quite up to par with the rest of their stuff." after a few more listens i've realized it's just as good as everything on Bright Lights, i wish they would have included it. such a great song. i can't wait for the new album |

i see it more as a couple who's realtionship is all about sex. however, the guy has become attached to the girl emotionally, and wants their relationship to mean something more. but "She feels that my sentimental side should be held with kid gloves" and doesn't want any of that. on the rest of it i'm kind of unsure, i think that he reconciled and decided to just let their relationships stay the way it is, even if he wants more, "cuz I like to get hooked." the last lines i interpret as just being a summary, and her love being "a pony" means that she just wants to have sex, her love is totally animal, and she doesn't talk much(she says brief things). but of course, like so many men, he is attached anyway, "my love's subliminal."
this is just my interpretation of what is in my opinion the best song on Turn On the Bright Lights and one of the best songs ever |

it sounds like "attention", but if you just listen you can clearly hear that he simply inhales sharply before saying "tension" |
