System of a Down – Cigaro Lyrics 19 years ago
The line "We're the regulators that deregulate" should be proof enough that this song is about our government and the situation in Iraq. That lyric is particularly interesting for two reasons: 1) It embodies the sense of American hypocracy that "Cigaro" is about and 2) it summarizes the point that System of a Down's been making since their first album - that our leaders dictate the affairs of foreign countries while allowing corporations and other entities to assume control over the American public.

Elliott Smith – Coast to Coast Lyrics 19 years ago
This cd has been out for two days and I've already listened to this song a half dozen times. Even though it's not stripped down like some of his best songs, this one really stands out for some reason. Anyway, I think this song is about a last ditch attempt to stop the dissolution of a relationship. I thought at first the relationship in question was that of his parents, as they were divorced, but he wouldn't have been old enough to remember their split.

The Shins – Those To Come Lyrics 19 years ago
This song has some very cool, very vivid imagery. I'm convinced the lines "they are cold, still, waiting..." refer to his own words. He fears that by opening his mouth, he may say something stupid and ruin the perfect moment of watching this beautiful woman make tea in her underwear.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 19 years ago
In regards to the last two comments, this may be my favorite song off of that soundtrack. One thing strikes me as odd, though. The song, upon hearing it in the movie, seems to fit so well with their meeting. But then I read the lyrics and it's all about unrequited love. I wonder if that was intentional.

The Offspring – Tehran Lyrics 19 years ago
If you know your history, you'll know that Tehran was the original version as Ronald Reagan's administration started a conflict in Iran long before Bush Sr. invaded Iraq. It wouldn't make sense if "Baghdad" preceded "Tehran".

Beastie Boys – Flowin' Prose Lyrics 19 years ago
Even though there's a hojillion hip-hop songs written about essentially the same thing, this stands out as being one of the smartest.

Radiohead – I Am a Wicked Child Lyrics 19 years ago
I think here Thom has written about the effects that devout religious parents have on their children. In the Catholic Church, at least, every one is told they are born with original sin. So in this song, it seems like a boy is praying for forgiveness because someone has ingrained in him the idea that, even if you're an innocent child, every human is inherently evil. Of course, this can really fuck with a kid's mind and I think that's what is being pointed out in this song.

Foo Fighters – M.I.A. Lyrics 19 years ago
If my interpretation of the song seems too overused or contrite, I'm sorry. But after pouring over the lyrics, there's only one conclusion that I keep coming to: Dave's singing about Kurt. He jumps in and out of character using his own perspective some of the time and Kurt's at others. The whole chorus of "Tonight I'm leaving going MIA" is Kurt saying goodbye while the line "red, red laced around your head" is Dave description of the suicide. The lines "Nevermind the mannequins...the revelation is now" I found very interesting too. Using the name of the album that changed alternative music, the narrator (Kurt in this case) is saying "Let's see what happens to all those carbon copy bands riding the wake of our success when I'm gone." You can disagree, but I really like this song and I was disappointed to see that no one had posted an opinion on what the song meant.

Elliott Smith – Angeles Lyrics 20 years ago
I believe mon no jigoku is right, and it's the last verse that has me convinced.
"I could make you satisfied in everything you do/
All your 'secret wishes' could right now be coming true/
And be forever with my poison arms around you"
The city has been personified and it's trying to entice people by promising fame and fortune when in actuality it has nothing good to offer.

If I'm not mistaken, Mr. John E. Trash from Home Gorwn makes a cameo on this track.

Sugarcult – Memory Lyrics 20 years ago
Is anyone getting tired of the overly transparent lyrics from these coookie-cutter pop-punk bands yet? No? Damn.

Chevelle – Anticipation Lyrics 20 years ago
It seems to be about a self-proscribed martyr, someone who maybe tends to dramatize and exaggerate their trials and pains ("The cuts on his hands speak a little louder"). Instead of being humble, this is someone who wants everyone to see he's sufferring for something ("He takes that side and lets you know", "The cuts on his hands made way to his face"). Of course, even after reading through it a few times it's still murky, so my guess is as good as any.

Foo Fighters – February Stars Lyrics 20 years ago
As so many people have stated above, this is about the last stages of a relationship in which Dave has become a spectator and is trying to hold onto for as long as possible. Because he's been involved in a number of separations (his parents, his wife, Kurt), I think this song is about the common characteristics of a disolving relationship rather than an isolated incident so I can see why so many people have posted about their take on the lyrics.

This song will always be timeless as long as America considers itself a superpower who must democratize other countries in the name of "freedom."

Nirvana – Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Lyrics 20 years ago
I disagree with say anything's comment. This song is all about the trials and tribulations Kurt and Courntey faced leading up to In Utero. Kurt though his management was screwing him ("It so relieving to know that you're leaving as soon as you get paid"), there were numerous legal issues ("It's so soothing to know that you'll sue me"), and then there was the whole controversy over whether or not Courtney had done heroin while carrying Frances. That's what the second verse is about, as the media had falsely condemned them of being unfit parents which started a witch hunt to take Frances out of their custody. And yes, I do think Kurt felt his situation paralleled Frances Farmer's to an extent. This is probably my favorite Nirvana song. It not only demonstrates that Kurt's lyrics were both abstract and clear at the same time, but the band's transitions from quiet to grungy, distorted, and loud are perfect.

Incubus – Version Lyrics 20 years ago
This song seems to be about creating a utopian society that doesn't have to answer to any government and whose citizens take care of one another. I think it's a great ideology, but it's one that is unobtainable and, like perfect communism, it works only in theory. Kudos to Brandon though for some lyrics that are far more intelligent than those of his "peers" in the rock community.

The Ernies – Here and Now Lyrics 20 years ago
It sounds like someone just left a lecture on the Big Bang and decided to write a song. If you feel like overanalyzing, the lyrics convey a sense that we are very small, lonely creatures in a vast, cold universe. However, I seriuosly doubt that a band calling themselves The Ernies would take such a philosophical stance. I don't know, maybe I'm underestimating them.

Incubus – Crowded Elevator Lyrics 20 years ago
The elevator is a great metaphor. He feels claustrophobic. He can't wait to get out. I think we can easily relate to his situation since we've all been in an elevator where there's no space, no one will say anything, and everyone can't wait for their floor.

Less Than Jake – Plastic Cup Politics Lyrics 20 years ago
A very sardonic view on the party scene. "And plastic smiles miles wide match plastic cups we'll leave behind." Empty people basking in artificial, alcohol-induced happiness.
