i'm not too much on religion but I think this might have a lot to do with god...., or a parent, or girlfriend, or even a friend.
I think it's about someone going down the wrong path in life and can't bring himself out of it alone. i.e. I've done this so I might go to prison, or hell (Heaven’s gates won’t open up for me, With these broken wings I’m fallin’). suicied might be the way out... or
I think he/she wants to be loved or at least feel that he is loved. And does things hoping someone will help.
I like the idea that it could be used in reference to someone trying to find god- but in all reality I think this is more about how someone can feel so lost that all they need is just a tiny crack to penetrate the darkness of their lives to offer them hope.

I was this way until just recently after suffering a an abusive childhood, drug issues and multiple broken homes I simply didn't feel as though i was capable fo being saved in any way shape or form- after all, who'd want to try?

As for the heavens...
As for the heavens gates lyrics, the thought of being broken spiritually and emotionally can make one feel as though they don't deserve better than they have- hence the broken wings comment.
But we all want to feel that emotion of being wanted- and thats the ultimate meaning of this song if you ask me. Finding that one person or place in your life that simply makes you feel as though you're worthy of being alive- of being human. Our past is just that- its the strength of those aroudn us and our own convictions that allow us to move forward intot he people we're meant to be.
