Put Your Lights On Lyrics
Put your lights on,
put your lights on
Hey now, all you lovers
Put your lights on,
put your lights on
Put your lights on,
put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on you better
leave your lights on
under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There's an angel with a hand on
my head
She says I've got
nothing to fear
in my soul
I still got a purpose to serve
So let your light shine,
into my home
God don't let me lose my
nerve
Lose my nerve
hey now, hey now
Wo-oh hey now, hey now,
hey now, hey now
Put your lights on,
put your lights on
Hey now, all you children
Leave your lights on you
better leave your lights on
living under my bed
Whispering in my ear
There's an angel with a
hand on my head
She says I've got
nothing to fear
She says, La ilaha illa Allah
You shine like stars
La ilaha illa Allah
You shine like stars
And fade away
The song doesn't end with "whooo-ahha hey la la" - it ends with "La ilaha illa Allah," which is much more representative of the nature of the song and Everlast. He had just come out of recovering from a heart attack, and had converted to Islam - hence "La ilaha illa Allah," the first part of the Kalima Shahadah, Islam's declaration of belief in the oneness of God. The Shahadah's daily recitation is one of the five pillars of Islam. Clearly, this is a very spiritual song for Everlast, and it shows in the lyrics.
It's about being a child. "She says i got nothing to fear" - his mother. actually cadillac craig's definiton is probably better than mine.
Everlast is the best rapper out there at the moment. He has a lot more to say than people like Gay-Z ("Yo, yo, wozzup bo!? Where mah ho's at??" - stupid shit like that.)
Well, i think this song is about opening up and not being afraid. Not hiding your problems away until they consume you ( hehe....thats me,guilty) Good vs evil, ur conscience, etc. Interesting..."children LEAVE ur lights on" implying this "light" is something we lose as we grow older and more cynical.
Anyways, I LOVE this song,I could listen to it for hours(which i almost do.lol) Oh,and I want to have Everlasts babies too.lol.
Actually the ending for the song is:
Because there's a monster living under my bed Whispering in my ear There's an angel, with a hand on my head She say's I've got nothing to fear La illaha illa Allah We all shine like stars La illaha illa Allah We all shine like stars Then we fade away
Everlast is actually a Muslim, so i guess this is a pretty holy song about redemption and turning back to the light. Monster=Temptation, Angel and the putting lights back on thingie=guidance to the right path...
This is from an interview he had with 'E Online'.
"Put Your Lights On was probably one of the most personal songs I wrote. It was written right after I had a major heart surgery, came really close to dying and was just coming out of that whole state of mind of realizing that I was gonna live. That's where the whole 'Put Your Lights on' thing comes in. It's just kind of about hope, but coming from a really dark place. and really questioning a lot of your beliefs. It came straight from the soul. It's really deep to me." -Everlast
See this is the gift of music ...I agree with all of you , yet dis-agree for me ...see with events in my life ...I see this as the struggle between good and evil as well ...to me it speaks of a warning ...of a personal nature ...a former soldier and Merc ...to listen eases those moments when someone strays too close to that " darkness" hidden deep in my soul
- the Angel tells me I am protected
- the monster tells me to unleash the carnage again
Leaving the lights on beats back the monster as any child knows ... in the song the singer prays for strength to " not loose his nerve " to me this means not to forget who he really is and asks for the streangth to continue to keep these forces in balance and thus in check ...course Im nutz so what the hades do I know !?
wat an amazinggg sonnggggg
this song is so fuckin tite i wanna crap my pants. the monster under his bed is a dark secret that he has,a burden on his mind. he wants to let people see it, but cant open up. even with this "angel" by his side, the monster's voice is louder. the melancholy sound of this song is incredible; sad yet mysterious. peace.
Everlast said this song was about when he was sick with an illness which i cant remember atm,and he looked over the city of LA (hence 'Put your lights on' i cant remember details but it was something like that.
I think of it being about the temptations of good and evil. "Put your lights on" is a reference to a halo. The sinners, lovers and killers are told to put them on. The children are told to leave them on.
