Once In A Lifetime Lyrics

It´s getting dark... too soon... a threatening silence...
Surrounding me... a wind comes up from the islands...
Distance fades to stormy grey
Washed out from the deep of the ocean
Here I will stand to face your wrath...
While all the others are praying

Calm down my heart... don´t beat so fast...
Don´t be afraid just once in a lifetime
No rain can wash away my tears
No wind can soothe my pain

You made me doubt, you made me fear
But now I´m not the same
You took my wife, my unborn son...
Torn into the deep of the ocean

I don't pretend that I love you
'Cause there is nothing left to lose

And when silence comes back to me
I find myself feeling lonely
Standing here on the shores of destiny
I find myself feeling lonely

I had a life to give... many dreams to live...
Don´t you know that you´re losing so much this time
Beyond the waves... I will be free
While all the others are praying

Calm down my heart...

The love in you, it does not burn,
There is no lesson you can learn
And there are sounds you cannot hear,
And there are feelings you can´t feel

Calm down my heart... don't beat so fast...
Don´t be afraid just once in a lifetime

I don't pretend that I love you
And this time I´m not scared of you

At the end of the day the single greatest song ever written.

My interpretation is a fusion of Televiper's and The Music Nazi's. The narrator, devastated by the loss of his wife and son, is standing on the edge of the ocean cursing his god, about to throw himself in. Truly an amazing song.

one of the most beautiful songs ever written. i keep wonder what Scott Peterson would think of it though.

If he's talking about God it isn't in a positive manner.

If he's talking to God, he's telling him that he doesn't love him, and he will no longer be told he should be afraid, that events in his life have changed him, and he's ready to face them on his own without being afraid...and in that he will find freedom.

"The love in you is does not burn" my love for you has no strength or power, it's empty

"There is no lesson you can learn" You don't listen

"and there sounds you cannot hear" You not unlimited in your site and abilities

"and there are feelings you can't feel" You are not compassionate.

Not to mention "Here I will stand to face your wrath, while all the others pray" I'm standing up to you while others pray.

I think you hit it right in the nail.

Not Valid

My thoughts: The sound God could not hear was the "music" or he'd have recognized the beauty of mankind and subsequently felt the feelings he couldn't feel: "compassion" and "empathy".

This is such a beautiful song. The melody is sort of bittersweet, and it really fits well with the sad/hope thats in the lyrics. "the love in you, it does not burn, there is no lesson you can learn and there are sounds you cannot hear, and there are feelings you can´t feel "

I think he's about to commit suicide by throwing himself into the ocean.

I think that you are right

Not Valid

I don't believe that he's literally intending to "throw himself into the ocean". I think that he's drowning in his sorrow and beyond the waves represents the "other side", in other words... death for himself.

I think Televiper has got it right.

I do think this song is about God, and as Televiper said, it is certainly not positive. "You took my wife, my unborn son" Who else but a greater being could do such a thing?

All of Televipers points were very good and hit it right on the nail as to what the artist was trying to convey. While I may not necessarily agree with the beliefs of the artist, this is a well written, well sung song. It makes for an odd mix of emotions to flow through me leaving me in a state of questioning and curiousity.
