At the end of the day the single greatest song ever written.
My interpretation is a fusion of Televiper's and The Music Nazi's. The narrator, devastated by the loss of his wife and son, is standing on the edge of the ocean cursing his god, about to throw himself in. Truly an amazing song.
I always understood it as him talking to his heart that basically "took" his wife and unborn son (I guess he wants a son) not in a literal way but in the way that his fear of connection and all that comes with it always stops him in his tracks and it ruined countless opportunities and potential relationships and now he may see another chance coming up (possibly the last realistic chance because he is older now) and his heart is starting to pound in fear again but this time he's not having it.

If he's talking about God it isn't in a positive manner.
If he's talking to God, he's telling him that he doesn't love him, and he will no longer be told he should be afraid, that events in his life have changed him, and he's ready to face them on his own without being afraid...and in that he will find freedom.

My thoughts: The sound God could not hear was the "music" or he'd have recognized the beauty of mankind and subsequently felt the feelings he couldn't feel: "compassion" and "empathy".

this song, holds such great memories for me, back when i used to work the goth night at this club in texas...it's a beautiful amazing song...one of my all time favorites...goes to listen to it
