"We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..."
With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

It is actually a traditional English folk rhyme - at least the first line and every subsequent odd line. The lines in between - "When springs..." etc. were written by Paul Simon, possibly during his stay in England. "Scarborough Fair" is another traditional song that Simon modified in a similar way.

amazing song. i watched the graduate for the first time a few weeks ago. im sure most people become obsessed with the soundtrack after they see that movie, but i am starting to wonder if i will ever listen to anything besides paul simon again. I just finished my freshman year at college... summer is underway and the girl that i loved in college is gone. she lived across the hall from my room and we became attached. we knew we would have to spend the summer apart, and despite this i told her only weeks before school ended that i loved her and she said the same for me. i knew it was not opportune to say this, but it was honest. now that i am about a month into summer, i don't know what to do. the overwhelming love i had for her before is fading now for some reason. "a love once new has now grown old." im going to turn 20 in a few months. when did i start getting older? i never grew up.

This interpretation was borne from having heard this song for the first time in years on Opening Day and thinking "holy ****", this totally fits.
This song.....oh my god, it just leaves me breathless. I don't know how can I not cry while listening to these few lines. This song is about all of us, that's the truth. My real story? I am senior in high school, I fell in love with a girl i thought was my soulmate. March 2013: during the school trip I told her what were my feelings. She told me we were just friends. April: I kept on hoping and staying next to her. I thought it was impossible she did not feel the same as I. May: She started talking with me about her worries and her plans about college, future and so on. Now it's June, tomorrow is the last high school day. I feel her more distant, I have just realized that, as the song says, in July she will fly away.......different college, new friends, new loves......we won't see each other except some former school mate reunion. After the final examination, ending in july, I have a whole month to forget her. That's august. If I'm lucky in september I won't suffer anymore because of her. A love once new will grow old. Hey mates that's life, that's art, everyone of us is a work of art, and both able to create and to appreciate other works of art, like a girl or a song. this song is a metaphor for young love as a short, passionate and flighty affair. the description of the man's object of affection is likened to a bird, which i thought was interesting (her movements / changes from season to season remind me of migration patterns birds have). if you've ever seen the 2004 movie "closer", natalie portman's character in the film is very similar to the kind of character portrayed in this song. like a bird, she cannot stay in one place for long and constantly wants to explore new places, new people. deep down inside, it's really her inability and fear of loving someone so truly and completely that makes her unable to commit. she can't let anyone get close, and thus her lover is left with a broken heart before a year has even gone by.

The depth of how it is sung makes Paul Simon seem like an old soul. He takes a simple poetic idea and puts it into a simple three stanza format and a miracle was created with this song.
Just a beautiful song. The lyricists during the 1960s were quit amazing. There was something about that decade that mused perhaps the greatest song lyrics ever written. Those who can write a lyric aren't recognized these days it seems because the lyrics written these days seem to emphasize materialism or egocentricity or is just a bunch of lines of cliche.
Or is it that people have forgotten to write good song lyrics? I wonder if any song writers feel challenged to write something meaningful when they hear a song like this.

Oh man this song is just so unbelievably beautiful. As posted in the first post. This mirrors a relationship perfectly. Especially the last lines are some I can identify with. I just had the worst September of my life. My ex-girlfriend told me that she has got a new boyfriend and that just killed me. Even though we broke up 6 months ago, it still hurt like hell! I guess I'm not over her yet…

hehe, something similar happened to me, Tyler2004durden. My long-time girlfriend and had some ups and downs. But on April 05, everything was alrite. May was wonderful, we talked a lot and I thought my relationship was fine as always. But then in June, she started talking to me less and hanged out with this "guy" who she considered her bestfriend. July, she broke up with me. I was devastated. August and September was a pretty lonely time and thought of forget her. Then, when I thought of this song one day, I couldnt stop crying. It hit right in the spot. Sad but beautiful song!! And I am happy to play it on the guitar.
