I always interpreted this song as being about heartache. The singer is rejected by the one he loves. He is so in love with her, that he cannot stand to see her because of the pain it brings him.

This is the beauty maked song. I think Silvio is in love with this woman, and he's going crazy. He wish get some rest of thinking about her. He is dreaming about her constantly and it's a sick situation.

Thank you Emiliana84 and Idril831; your comments were very enlightening. I started out thinking this song was about some guy's woman going cold on him. (i.e. turning the leaves into something frozen as opposed to beautiful crystals)
Now that I know the back story, I feel humbled. But I still believe that the lyrics can (loosely) be interpreted in another way. So I wrote a poem based on it. Except my subject is more general and detached (this poem is about America's shallow conception of beauty):
True Beauty's Loss
I hope the leaves don't touch you as they fall, so that you can't freeze them up. I hope the rain stops being a "wonder" running down your body. I hope that the moon can come out without you. I hope that the world doesn't give you an easy time.
I wish that your constant gaze, your perfect words, your perfect smile would all just fade away. I hope that something happens to get you off my mind: A blinding flash of light, a blizzard, something at least to take me to death, So that I won't see you so much, so that I won't see you at all, in every second...in each waking vision. I hope I can't even touch you in song.
I hope the dawn doesn't bring back memories that fall on me. and I wish that your name didn't claim its glory. If only your steps stopped echoing in the walls of my mind... I need for this useless lust to fade away... to your land of flowers and emptyness.
[Repeat]
Rudolphman, that is the best interpretation of this song I've ever read in English, I made an account just so that I could tell you that, because often its hard to translate such a emotional and powerful Spanish song to its same degree in English.

It's very strange that noone has ever written a word about 'Ojalá' here in Songmeanings.... Well, I'll have to be the first... For me, this songs means both heaven and hell... joy and sadness... It's the strangest end for a love story... They love each other but the circumstances obligue them to make the decission of ending their story.... And I say... how can you kill love? I'm sure it's completely impossible and I think Silvio thinks the same.

i would like people will know about all silvio rodriguez music, there's a lot of songs of this artist, i'm very surprising when i only found one lyric!

todo el cd donde esta incluido "ojala" es exelente, otro cd totalmente recomendado es "dias y flores", es uno de los mejores!

This song was written to a dictator, someone told me that. I think it's hidden inside a beautiful love song. Silvio is a genius... Also as a musician, this song is really rich musically... It's my favourite one.

It's a song about a dannish girl he fell in love with. That's not a joke, it's true. Everyone in cuba knows. That's why the line "A tu viejo gobierno de difuntos y flores." It's a reference to Hamlet so overall, a beautiful love song.

Everyone i know has told me the same thing, that Cuba Dedicated this song to the USA.

when i was like 12 or 13 I always thought it was a song dedicated to Fidel Castro...
