To Be With You Lyrics

Hold on little girl
Show me what he's done to you
Stnad up little girl
A broken heart can't be that bad
When it's through, it's through
Fate will twist the both of you
So come on baby, Come on over
Let me be the one to show you

I'm the one who wants to be with you
Deep inside I hope you feel it too
Waited on a line of greens and blues
Just to be the next to be with you

Build up your confidence
So you can be on top for once
Wake up who cares about
Little boys that talk too much
I seen it all go down
Your game of love was all rained out
So come on baby, Come on over
Let me be the one to hold you

CHORUS

Why be alone when we can be together baby?
You can make my life worthwhile
And I can make you start to smile

I like this song a lot. I think it pretty much speaks for itself in terms of interpretation. The devotion the narrator feels for this girl is really something...

what the hell does " waiting on a line of greens and blues" mean?

@WinterOnyx - This is my question, too. Maybe greens and blues represent envy and sadness, the feelings he's experienced while waiting? It's still an odd phrasing, but that's the best I've got.

@WinterOnyx This question has plagued me for YEARS. I just feel like he can't be saying "greens and blues". I like to think he's saying "cheats and bruts"; makes much more sense.

@WinterOnyx I always thought men in service uniforms. Like garbage men and police officers. LOL ... Hey, I was 16 when the song came out.

it may not be blatantly about prostitution, but there is definitely a strong sexual implication that he is "watiing on a line" of guys who taking turns humping a girl so he can be the next to be "deep inside" of her while she rides "on top" of him for once. I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but if it was accidental, then this is the funniest faux pa ever. and if it was intended, then Mr. Big is just a sickie!

I can't believe no one ever interprets this song correctly. The female subject of this song is a PROSTITUTE. There is no mistaking this. She is a prostitute near a US military base (*possibly in Japan - see below). GREENS=Army dudes, BLUES=Marine dudes. LINE=dudes waiting to visit our subject lady of the evening.

Now I know you will say, "but this song is about relationships and heartbreak and true love and BLAH BLAH BLAH..." I agree that the first verse points to a broken heart and whatnot, but that is just to lure the listeners--especially female listeners who may not embrace a song about prostitution--into buying into and buying this song.

What is up for debate is why our hero, the singer, wants to "be next". I like the Pimp Theory--he can offer her a better employment package (monetary benefits, cleaner work environment, fewer backhands, etc.), which would make his life "worthwhile" and her "smile". Or maybe he's just a connoisseur of carnality and she's a VERY GOOD PROSTITUTE. I'll even concede that this song is about true love, but only because he's rescuing her from a life of whoredom.

*Mr. Big was insanely popular in Japan and the US has some major military installations there with MANY young men with impure desires, spawning the widespread prostitution market. Maybe Mr. Big witnessed this phenomenon and maybe they took an interest in one particular "little girl", giving birth to the greatest song about hookers that chicks and ultra-sensitive dudes think is about love...EVER.

I love the fact that the guy knows what she's been through and wants to help pull her out of it. Truly touching.
