Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

"We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..."
With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."
I know I am not like the rest of the Gin Blossom's fans. I'm a 15 year old girl. But when I was little my dad was in a band that practiced every Wednesday in our garage with a few other lifeguards. They played a lot of Tom Petty, Stray Cats, and most importantly-- Gin Blossoms. There's no reason why I'm commenting on this song rather than the others, it just happens to be the one I'm listening to. My dad gave up all hope for the Gin Blossoms when Doug died. He thought their second album was a flop, but I don't think he realized that Doug only wrote half of their stuff on the former. A few months ago I realized the band was still going, touring even. We tried to get tickets to see them at the Coach House in Capistrano... but stuff didn't work out. We did, however, start listening to the Gin Blossoms all the time again. I appreciate their music so much now and they are definitely one of my favorite bands.

The singer is questioning the direction his life has taken so far, attempting to decide if he should change course.

The song is about a relationship that the singer ended that he hasn't let go of. The singer is single and unsure of his ability to love ever since. He still thinks his former lover is the best one for the job, if they would just change who they are. They haven't yet, wanting this is unrealistic, and he has lost perspective on the issue(s) between them.

The singer never conclusively assigns blame for the breakup. As the words “something I forgot was wrong” are too vague to discern if it was the lovers shortcomings or the singer wanting the lover to be something they are not.
He remembers the good times in the past and tells his former lover that he will be theirs if they are willing to change, unless he should fall for another while they are apart.
"Until I fall away, I won't keep you waiting long."
The singer states that he believes there is nothing he can change to fix things between them. But, that the lover might be able to. So, he hopes and waits.
"Until I fall away I don't know what to do anymore."
Use of the word 'until' instead of 'unless' shows that the singer feels enough time apart will also be the end to his distress.

I am also a younger Gin Blossoms fan, however one of the reasons i love them so much is because they were one of the first bands i heard when i started to listen to the radio and started to buy CD's and whatnot.

Yeah, I'm a 20 year old guy. I just always heard my dad listening to them, so gin blossom songs were the first songs I ever had the words memorized to, even my slightly younger friends (17ish) swear they have never even heard any of the songs. It makes me depressed for them.

I feel like this song is about him just waiting to slip into the depths of insanity brought on by solitude. He's been waiting for the right person to come along and love him, but he's getting to the point where he thinks it will never happen.
In fact he fears it will never happen again, more than he fears anything else.

until i fall away is about a guy who is so heartbroken that he wonders if he can ever love again. now that's powerful! the guy seems to have a great contradiction in his mind, as he's like to move on and feel love, but is also deeply afraid of having his heart trampled upon once again. this song contains another of use of gb's favorite word- fools.
