Godzilla Lyrics

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on subway trains
Scream "MyGod!" as he looks in on them

He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town

Oh no, they say he's got to go go go Godzilla
Oh no, there goes Tokyo go go Godzilla

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man

the japanese part is supposed to be a news broadcast. It says:

"Rinji news o moshiagemasu. Rinji news o moshiagemasu. Godzilla ga Ginza houmen e mukatte imasu. Daishikyuu hinan shite kudasai. Daishikyuu hinan shite kudasai."

Which means quite literally:

"We give you special news. We give you special news. Godzilla is turning towards the Ginza district. As soon as possible take shelter, please. As soon as possible take shelter, please."

A more English-based translation would render:

"Attention, emergency news! Attention, emergency news! Godzilla is going toward the Ginza district! Find shelter immediately, please! Find shelter immediately, please!"

@guitardudemh91 Thank you! That's been bugging me for many, many years.

while Prog Rocker makes an interesting analogy I would agree with Lozz that he is digging to deeply. I believe this song's meaning is quite clearly stated at the end:

History shows again and again How nature points up the folly of men

We cut down the tree's, rip apart the earth, dump our waste into the water, poison the air, poke holes in our ozone, and as the song says nature points out these follies. We damn the rivers, the damns break. We poison the air, it rains acid down upon us. We dump our wastes into the waters, a tsunami or hurricane ravages our settlements. History shows again and again how nature points up the folly of men.

Godzilla himself is a wonderful "political statement" about the terrible power of nuclear weaponry. Godzilla is a representation of the awakening of a power that Mankind cannot control, nor can they destroy ultimately. Godzilla becomes a force of nature unto himself, like typhoon or an earthquake. This is why (in my opinion) the American version of Godzilla was so awful: the monster is supposed to be indestructible. We aren't supposed to be able to kill it with our weapons. We created this new and terrible power, and now we must live with it, and pray it doesn't wipe us out.

Nature, in the form of the Hybrid/Mutant monster, has indeed pointed up the folly of Man. At least in the Japanese movies.

@Major Valor Hilarious interpretation!!... oh, you are serious - don't read too much into a simple (yet great) horror movie or the song BOC made in tribute.

I can understand your confusion, after all, it is such an esoteric song.

Anyways, on one hand, I think both Shadow and Major have hit the nail on the head, but on the other, missed completely. I believe that this song is merely a tribute to the giant monster who's lived as a hero for children and inner-children all over the world for over a half a century, no real deeper meaning behind it. However, Godzilla has always been a powerful metaphor for the destructive consequinces of man's practices, whether it be from nuclear power or pollution. "History shows again and again how nature points up the folly of man" is practically a quote from the movies.

Gee, I wonder what this is about...? Heh, they speak Japanese in the middle of the song. This is the very first Blue Oyster Cult song I ever heard. Errr...it was a MIDI format when I first heard it, but three years later I got the real deal, and it roxxors.
