“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
I'm thinking overall it is about sin, human nature & salvation. he starts out all wide eyed and bushy tailed with innocence and the hope of love, then becomes aware/diseased by earthly pleasures that are short and unfulfilling, yet he seeks them and idolizes them anyway (i.e. tequila sunrise). And he laments the fall of man into sin (from adam & eve) asking God why. verse 2 to me seems like he found salvation, as in he took the gamble to trust/ believe in God (learned from the Bible...ie ancient stories) and when he did this, he lost the world (being 'of the world') but gained a man (Jesus). but even when you have salvation and are no longer of the world, you still crave worldly things like the tequila sunrise
