Did you grow up lonesome and one of a kind?
Were your records all you had to pass the time?
Or maybe you were taken by the mysteries of New Orleans?
Or the uptight, rowdy girls of Lower Chelsea?
And we're hustling under but we live in the city
And we keep it down when we take a beating
Yeah, we keep it down with the radio on
And if you find a good man, don't take him home
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
She'll still remain the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Did you grow up a good girl,
You daddy's pride?
Did you make all the right moves,
Take all the right drugs right on time?
American girls, they want the whole world
They want every last little light in New York City
But we're hustling under and we're fast asleep
And we keep it down when we take a beating
Yeah, we keep it down with the radio on
And if you find a good man, don't take him home
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
She'll still remain the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Well they say these days,
Nothing comes cheap
And everything has a price
Everything has a price
Nothing is free
Not even me
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
She'll still remain the Queen of Lower Chelsea
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
She'll still remain the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Were your records all you had to pass the time?
Or maybe you were taken by the mysteries of New Orleans?
Or the uptight, rowdy girls of Lower Chelsea?
And we're hustling under but we live in the city
And we keep it down when we take a beating

And if you find a good man, don't take him home
When you're working full-time

And we hustle in London, but we live in the city
And spending all of your nights, never dancing like you did
Should of stayed and been the queen of lower Chelsea
The line is, "While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had"
Check the lyrics below...
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
Should've stayed and been the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Did you grow up a good girl,
You daddy's pride?
Did you make all the right moves,
Take all the right drugs right on time?
American girls, they want the whole world
They want every last little light in New York City
But we're hustling under and we're fast asleep
And we keep it down when we take a beating
Yeah, we keep it down with the radio on
And if you find a good man, don't take him home
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
Should've stayed and been the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Well they say these days,
Nothing comes cheap
And everything has a price
Everything has a price
Nothing is free
Not even me
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
Should've stayed and been the Queen of Lower Chelsea
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights never dancing like you used to
While the gravity hangs on all the selling points you had,
Should've stayed and been the Queen of Lower Chelsea
I'm not entirely sure what it is about, but it seems to be about a girl who grew up working hard for what she could, a girl who seemingly would deserve everything but yet get's beat and she just turns the other cheek and doesn't open up about it but instead just lives through it because she has the idea that lifes hard, you just gotta keep living.
If you listen to the acostic version then you can understand the lyrics better. Or read the booklet.
"If i die, When i die, then they shall bury me"
or
"If i die, When i die, then find the time to bury me"
Were your records all you had to pass the time?
Or maybe you were taken by the mysteries of New Orlenans?
Or the uptight, rowdy girls of Lower Chelsea?
And we're hustling London, but we live in the city
And we keep it down when we take a beating
Yeah, we keep it down with the radio on
And if you find a good man, don't take him home
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights, never dancing like you did
While the gravity hangs all over some boys you had,
Should've stayed and been the Queen of Lower Chelsea
Did you grow up a good girl,
You daddy's pride?
Did you make all the right moves,
Take all the right drugs right on time?
American girls, they want the whole world
They want every last little light in New York City

Everyone has a price
Not nothing is free
Not even me
When you're working full-time
And spending all of your nights, never dancing like you did

Should've stayed and been the Queen
When you're working full-time

quite a few other mistakes but i'll be damned if i can tell what's right myself.
I think whoever commented "Gaslight are from NJ so would only write about New York" is being a bit presumptuous, using that logic "Ida called you woody, Joe" is actually about some random bloke from New Jersey because Brian doesn't know Joe Strummer.
