Spanish Sahara Lyrics

So I walked through to the haze
And a million dirty waves
Now I see you lying there
Like a lilo losing air, air
Black rocks and shoreline sand
Still dead summer I cannot bear
And I wipe the sand from my arms
The Spanish Sahara
The place that you'd wanna
Leave the horror here

Forget the horror here
Forget the horror here
Leave it all down here
It's future rust and it's future dust

Forget the horror here
Forget the horror here
Leave it all down here
It's future rust and it's future dust

Now the waves they drag you down
Carry you to broken ground
Though I'll find you in the sand
Wipe you clean with dirty hands
So god damn this boiling space
The Spanish Sahara
The place that you'd wanna
Leave the horror here

Forget the horror here
Forget the horror here
Leave it all down here
It's future rust and it's future dust

I'm the fury in your head
I'm the fury in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

I'm the fury in your head
I'm the fury in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

I'm the fury in your head
I'm the fury in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

Forget the horror here
Forget the horror here
Leave it all down here
It's future rust and it's future dust

Choir of furies in your head
Choir of furies in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

The choir of furies in your head
Choir of furies in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

Choir of furies in your head
Choir of furies in your bed
I'm the ghost in the back of your head

'Cause I am

In the video posted by dressgirl ( youtube.com/watch ), where Yannis talks about what the song means to him, he says:

It has no real relevance to the real Spanish Sahara, where none of the band members have actually been to. It's more of an imaginary place that's something that's quite nightmarish and ravaged. It's like a film cell of some desolate landscape. The whole song in a way is like getting over a trauma that you see there. But the trauma doesn't go away and it multiplies from one into a bunch of furies at the end which is to do with the Greek myth of the Furies (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erinyes) which would haunt families and generations.

Basically 'the horror' refers to a line out of heart of darkness by a character named Kurtz, he cries out 'the horror, the horror'. The line 'the horror' in modernist literature has become an established concept meaning theres nothing beyond death, its the concept of the 'death of god', the horror is nothingness. Future rust/future dust is a contradiction in terms, rust obviously is the outcome of metal decaying over time. Future rust and future dust means that it is inevitable that the future of things will fade. Every other line in the song 'like a lilo losing air' are similes to reinforce this point, God is also interchanged with the term 'i am' from the bible. Furies in your head, is the torment of whether it is something beyond us such as God reminding us that this life is temporary, or just our own thoughts posing as something bigger. Either way, 'the horror' which is the certainty that everyone will die and thats theres nothing beyond death is too much for as to worry about in the present. 'Leave the horror' is leaving behind and ignoring the thought of God, nothingness or just death itself.

Those are some interesting insights to this song and I like your references used. When I hear this song I picture a man describing his experience of the battles fought in the Spanish Sahara time period. I personally like the opening lyric "So I walked through to the haze and a million dirty waves". I picture a man walking through the battle field after the dust has settled and how he's experiencing so many feelings such as doubt, fear, hopelessness, loneliness, uncertainty, and sadness. I think the dirty waves could be all the dead bodies...

I think you are right now about most of this. Just to add some thoughts that would add more support to your interpretation:

  • "god damn this boiling space" may refer to the increasing entropy of the universe, and the fact that at some point in the future energy will be dissipated and completely disordered. Boiling is a form of physical change in which molecules become more random and less structured, which is a form of entropy.

  • If HauntedHarmony is right below, perhaps the sight of a dead dog triggered these reflections on death, meaning, chaos, nothingness, etc. This also may help explain what is going on when he describes finding something in the sand and wiping it clean with dirty hands (all of this quite literal).

  • The Spanish Sahara may refer to the place where he saw the dog, or it could be a metaphor for the ambiguous status of life/universe. According to Wikipedia, "Its sovereignty remains under dispute... The United Nations considers the former Spanish Sahara a non-decolonized territory, with Spain as the formal administrative power." Similarly, at one time the universe was thought to be governed by God, but now it is not clear if anything is governing it.

  • Wanting to leave the horror in the Spanish Sahara may be a metaphor for wanting to believe that the universe does have an ultimate meaning/purpose insofar as it is governed by God. When the sovereignty of God in the universe is no longer under dispute, the horror of nothingness goes away.

I'm not sure if I buy the "I am" references as referring to God. I'm also not sure what any of the "fury" references might mean.

  • It just occurred to me that "fury" might be an allusion to the Shakespeare quote:

“Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

it's about the persistence of trying to forget someone. its hard, and when it succeeds, there's always fragments of memory haunting inside.

beautiful song a nice start to an highly anticipated album

i really love the line "it's future rust and it's future dust" meaning that something dreaded "the horror" can create a corroding effect on a person/couple/personality, and to cause a person to become laissez-faire

    BY THE WAY

it's actually "the spanish sahara the place that you'd wanna lose the horror" instead of "let's banish the horror"

    My Opinion

I also love the line "it's future rust and it's future dust" along with the line "now i see you lying there/like a lilo losing air"

I think it must be 'lilo' instead of 'lie-low', and 'I cannot bear' instead of 'I cannot bare'. And 'Spanish Sahara' as someone has already highlighted.

I read that Spanish Sahara is about, or inspired by Yannis' lucid memory of seeing a dead dog floating in the sea. It really is such a beautiful, haunting song.

Yeah, I hate people that take every song and say it's about drugs or fucking. Spanish Sahara is so tender, so deep, so cold. Like you wote: haunting. And seeing something like an animal, holding such a symbolism of innocence I could imagine being very upsetting and disturbing. Transfers through really well.

instead of "Quiet the fury...." It's "Choir of furies..."

See the video: youtube.com/watch This song is about suicide. He is the person lying on the beach. He picks himself out of the sea. The singer and the person walking through the Spanish Sahara is the ghost at the back of his own head, "the fury" delivering him from the "horror here". Furies are "the embodiment of the act of self-cursing" - see wiki. He is talking to himself from the dead. Absolutely haunting, absolutely brilliant.

It's clearly about depression. And he's trying to carry on, but it's stronger than him.

    "Cause I am

I'm the fury in your head - mind illness, bad thoughts, anxiety I'm the fury in your bed - insomnia, bad thoughts I'm the ghost in the back of your head - something that never goes away"

    Forget the Horror!

what's a lilo? I googled words similair to what I thought he said, and lie-low was the only thing making sense.

A lilo is a UK term for an air matress en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_mattress
