Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.
It's been a long night away from it all
The grabbing authority of my peers
The rusty cage that never seems to open
When can I escape?
When can I swim to the moon?
I've heard this expression my entire life
Never realized how peaceful a statement it is
All alone on the worlds waters
Here I am
The sun's slowly drifting past the edge of the world (can't blame our ancestors)
I'm the loneliest boat on this entire body of water
Rest will not give my awakening purpose
This is why I have come here in the first place
A peace I have never felt
A life I did not want to live
I will awake through sleep
The drifting drifter
Look into the picture
(The Foreshadowing)
No more panic
No more regret
No more hoping for a new mess
Slide into the water
Become one with the sea
Life seems so much smaller
Swim to the moon
I awake with a cool breeze blowing through my dirty hair
Rested
Stable
A first
A caffeine junkie's longest wish: peace and quiet
No wake-ups
No expectations
This "as seen on TV" anchor is just another lie I guess
Hoping for something that's not there
Filling a void that I can't quite put my finger on
This loneliness I always seek
I'm in the middle of black water
No sign of human life in any direction
The most peaceful event of my life seems to have typically turned into a struggle
I'm in the middle of black water
No sign of human life
Panic takes over my body
I have indeed floated due to a non-reversible decision to flee
Just for a day I told myself...
My survival skills were lost years ago
Here I am: no food, no clean water, and this extremely embarrassing attempt at a "get away outfit"
This is an inevitable death
Slide into the water
Become one with the sea
Life seems so much smaller
Swim to the moon
Look into the picture
(Worry leaves my body)
This is what I lived to be
This very moment is the first time in my life that I've felt pure joy
Slide into the water
Become one with the sea
Life seems so much smaller
Swim to the moon
The grabbing authority of my peers
The rusty cage that never seems to open

He certainly did earn that reputation.
Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.
This is a great song, but honestly, it's just a mess.
There isn't really anything memorable in this whole song, besides Blake's solo. And maybe the "Slide into the water Become one with the sea. Life seems so much smaller."
But thats about it.
true that man. they just keep trying to pull a dream theatre thing w/ their songs, especially in terms of length. what a beastly long song, but you're right, a lot of it is a mess. i did enjoy blake's drum work and the main chorus to the song is also breathtaking :-)

but yeah, throughout this entire album, or on at least a few songs i got a real distinct dream theater vibe musically, which isn't bad i guess, it just further takes away from btbam's one-of-a-kind sound i think. still an outstanding album tho. i miss the ibanez's too.. :/
that's odd, i also get the dream theater vibe and i have only heard a few tracks by them because they are cheesy pretentious fucks who i dont think are worth my time.

but as a contradictory aside, let's not be overcritical of this song. it is most definitely a btbam song and it will certainly grow on you and, if you are lucky, you will learn to love it as much as i do. this song is intense and has an amazing ending, it finishes this album really well.

also i'm sort of a hopeless fanboy who will probably always love whatever they release
I love the whole song, it does seem messy but I don't mind that at all. In my eyes... it's perfect.

Bler.. start of the track got me all confused about what I was even listening to. First riff sounded so much like dream theaters 'in the presence of enemies'.. listen to the first minute of each song..
@Thisstory

ITPOE sounds more like Obfuscation to me. The intro that is.

@jonlabs

Ooh, you're so rebellious, "oh, look at me, I have an opinion." I don't care whether you like DT or not, but honestly, saying they're stupid and pretentious is just plain stupid.
I agree ericchaos, it has some really good parts, but it just feels like BTBAM tried too hard to make this song long. Fossil Genera is probably the best song off TGM in my opinion.
