Winter Passing Lyrics
I can practically hear him singing the words. I cannot wait until December 2nd.
Just reading the lyrics you could tell it was going to be a brilliant song, but to hear him sing it just makes the song even better. Its such a beautiful song.
I fell in love with the acoustic version the first time I heard it. It is such a gorgeous song, and William Beckett is absolutely brilliant on an acoustic. This song brought tears to my eyes when they played it live on Bill & Trav's.
It seems that everyone has a different opinion on the two versions. When making the comparison between the regular version and the acoustic, I think that it depends on which you heard first. In my personal opinion, the version that was released to iTunes on 12/2 was not as good as the acoustic version played live. I just think that this song sounds more (appropriately) emotional when acoustic. The 12-2 version has a more upbeat vibe, and I don't think that's right for this song. It also sounds a bit techy and computerized, and I just don't think those factors go along with these lyrics.
This song is definitely about the holidays and the feelings associated with winter time. The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy/family/love, but are more often more accomponied with stress and sorrow than anything, and this song points that out. Winter Passing seems to also be about losing a relationship and getting rejected by someone who just doesn't feel the same anymore during a time that relationships are supposed to be blooming. For being such a heartthrob, I find it odd that many of Beckett's songs seem to reference such negative relationships, ha just kidding.
But your voice rang clear.
"You said, 'For all I thought I’d ever need, It's hard to face the holidays without.' Well, I’ve left my last message on your machine. It's hard to face the holidays when you’re looking for the words to say. When you're looking for the words to say." I really believe that these lines are about a conversation between him and (possibly) the girl of his affection. She's telling him that he's not giving her what she wanted, and he's telling her that he doesn't know what else he can say.
"So you’ve found a friend. You spend all your cold nights with him, But if I was there, Then I’d wonder why you still wear my jacket, Closed with traces of my scent." These lines are definitely referencing how his former love has already found someone new, but he's telling her that she hasn't forgotten him yet, as seen in the "Then I’d wonder why you still wear my jacket, Closed with traces of my scent.
Just my interpretation.
I compleatly agree with you. I heard the acoustic version first, and just fell in love with it. But when I heard the iTunes version I was suprised it wasnt acoustic. I just felt that it was suited more to acoustic. The iTunes version was more boppy and up beat which really doesnt suit the lyrics. But still a beautiful song. Beautiful lyrics. and your interpretation is exactly how I interpreted it. :]

The newer version does sound more prodouced, and I was expecting something more acoustic, but William still manages to convey an impressive amount of emotion through the song. I can't stop listening to it...I'm not going through heartbreak, or about to, but this song still effects me. That's what makes a good song in my opinion, one that makes you really feel something[sounds really "emo", I know, but it's true], whether it be love, hate, sadness or joy. This is one of those great songs.
I don't really have anything new to add to the meaning of this song; I think it's all pretty much been said. And I agree that, having heard it acoustic and live first, the single version doesn't sound like it evokes as much emotion... when you first start to listen to it. But I think that it builds as the song goes on, and even though it's not quite as raw as the acoustic version, the emotion is definitely still there. Something about the way he sings the word "closed" in the second verse really gets me. I don't know why, but to me it sounds like you hear sort of the pain of what he's feeling a lot in that one word.
I was at the show in Detroit when they first played it live for the first time. They said it was because it was the first snow they saw that year. William played it acoustically and it was so beautiful. Im not a fan of the electric version as much but its still beautiful.
