nah... This song is about manufactured pop music and the 'X factor' culture of today. Richard is a strong hater of this culture.

Its about people who sing about love and deep feeling without the passion of being in that deep feeling, its just fake, unlike himself (Richard) sings about love and pain and the blues he feels everyday. when you see him sing he really does sing with passion even looking like he might cry...

Originally I hated this song. It just didn't sound like The Verve to me or something. But now I'm totally addicted to it.

Not quite sure what exactly the meaning is though.

I believe it's commenting on the destructiveness of human encroachment and development and serving as a warning that once we lose something it's gone.

It's borrowing from 'Jerusalem' by William Blake.

'And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark Satanic Mills?'

etc.

The first two lines of the song are a present-day interpretation of Blake's - both question society [Blake critcises the industrial revolution of the 18th century, Ashcroft on globalisation/capitalism/mass-production].

Well... Long time, no see The Verve... And now that they're back, I think that they're better than ever. I don't really understand the song, but in my head, this is all about how inspirational love is, how much can it affect your life, in a good or in a bad way, the impact that it has on simple lives. But that's just my 2 cents...

Blake's poem refers to the possibility that Jesus visited England, and built a new Jerusalem somewhere near Glastonbury. Blake doesn't state anything as fact, but asks the question "and did those feet in ancient times...etc".

In my opinion, Richard Ashcroft is asking, what would happen, if jesus came again in modern times? He's saying that our modern affliction is apathy. Choosing a life of bland consumerism over real emotion or belief in anything. Our addiction is to things we don't need, usually at the expense of others living in poverty. If jesus came again today, he'd be wearing trainers made in a sweatshop in China and shopping in malls. I think the comparrison between "dark satanic mills" and "bright prosaic malls" is brilliant.

I'm not sure if Ashcroft is saying anything about religion, or just about our modern dilemma. As an atheist myself I certainly still find it powerful. Because real emotion is often painful, unpleasant and loud. Whereas the things we're told to consume are supposed to be easy and pleasant and enticing

I just feel he is tryin to say: with all the circumstances and ideas of the present age will we be able to walk on others' sheos -maybe indicatin it by soles made in china-, would we ever feel the world's afflictions?! through the bright prosaic malls!! or other things that keep us selfcentered, busy, lost in possessions n materials and it goes on and on and on.. Keepin us away, keepin us apart though we share humanity-we are one,incomplete-, keepin us blind not seein how superficial we became though we stand in the shade, though we have no excuses..we're like waitin for a lightining to awake us..

then comes the part:

Cause love is noise, love is pain Love is these blues that I'm singing again

And I veiw it differently here, I think its means we messed up the whole meaning of love and it became the noise,the pain and the blues, its defined on these modern times as a sourse of anger, selfishness and superficialty where its in the bigger picture or originally above all of that and against all what is bad in human.

or maybe in a totally opposite way..if you truelly n deeply love in these modern times with all what you see world wide you just can't help it but to feel the noise, the pain and the blues sharin all the sufferin sharin all the heavy burdens!!

I agree...at first listen, it seems more like a Richard Ashcroft solo joint than a whole band effort...but it IS rather catchy, and that repeating background vocal totally makes the song. Still, for a first single, especially a comeback single, I would've went with a full-on rocker, although the band did give us the great "Mover" for free. I think the song is about how music can open our eyes and perceptions to stop being so close-minded of the world around us.

I agree with you all. When I first heard this song, I didn't really apprecieate it as much as I do now. I guess after listening to it on repeat, it not only grew on me, but it made me realise how simple it is, yet but a big meaning it carries. & they say it's the simple things in life that matter in the end.

To me I interpret it as acknowledging, understanding and coming to terms with the terrible state and condition some parts of the world are and the many world issues that have yet to be reslolved. Even though there is so much suffering, and problems in our world today, and instead of focusing on the negativity, I guess he's managed to find some peace through himself. He's realised that even though he doesn't have the power to change the world for the better, he does however have the power help the world by change himself for the better, one less person whose adding more suffering and pain to this world. I think the chorus in the song is also sending out the message that living is loving. To live is to love. The reason why we continue to journey towards the end of the road, figuratively speaking, is to love and be loved. To attach and to be attached to things, people, emotions, places etc that are on earth. I also feel it's about seeking redemption through love, there's a lot of repitition and conjunctive meanings, especially in the final verse:

"Will those feet in modern times Walk on soles made in China? Will those feet in modern times See the bright prosaic malls? Will those feet in modern times Forgive me all my sins Love is noise" This makes me think of going through the world's entire history, and the greatest and worst moments in time. & He's wondering if people will accept him and look past his sins, that he has committed through his lifetime, just as though they have with many terrible things that have happened throughout the history of the world, such as wars.

It's an beautiful song, and I'm kinda disappointed in myself that I disregarded it a little at first. Change is important and just because it carries a style of sound different to their other songs, it shouldn't under value it's worth. Priceless.
