Sinkin' Soon Lyrics

We're an oyster cracker on the stew,
And the honey in the tea,
We're the sugar cubes, one lump or two,
In the black coffee,
The golden crust on an apple pie,
That shines in the sun at noon,
We're a wheel of cheese high in the sky,
But we're gonna be sinkin' soon.

In a boat that's built of sticks and hay,
We drifted from the shore,
With a captain who's too proud to say,
That he dropped the oar,
Now a tiny hole has sprung a leak,
In this cheap pontoon,
Now the hull has started growing weak,
And we're gonna be sinkin' soon.

We're gonna be
Sinkin' soon,
We're gonna be
Sinkin' soon,
Everybody hold your breath 'cause,
We're gonna be sinkin' soon

We're gonna be
Sinkin' soon,
We're gonna be
Sinkin' soon,
Everybody hold your breath 'cause,
Down and down we go.

Like the oyster cracker on the stew,
The honey in the tea
The sugar cubes, one lump or two?
No thank you none for me.
We're the golden crust on an apple pie,
That shines in the sun at noon,
Like the wheel of cheese high in the sky
Well ... we're gonna be sinkin' soon

what I like about this song is that it's kind of fictional. it really makes it attractive. i don't look for a very special meaning in this song. the feeling that it has, the capitan's character, and the tangible descriptions ... these are things that makes me listen to this song thousands of times. and each time i get a different impression.

I believe its about a couple that are happy and go together well, but something was wrong with their relationshiop from the start that is causing them to "sink"

At first I thought it was about the Titanic. Then I listened closer. Now I'm convinced it's about how we're not taking care of our planet. The words and most of the music are by Lee Alexander, known for his biting satire. Norah wrote the bridge. She's also a promoter of social consciousness. The melodies are stick-in-your-head clever, and the delivery is deceptively smooth as silk.

Generally, I think it's about arrogant people who thought they had it made, in a rebel kind of way... and now they're sinking cuz of their negative actiosns.

This is my favorite of the album, truly a masterpiece when you factor in vocals, the vague and beautiful lyrics and the amazing instrumentation . She's really great.

I got the vague impression it was about a couple breaking up soon, but the above mentioned environmental consciousness message fits very well too because it's too wide to be just about two people.

My interpretation of the song goes like this: It about a realtionship (lovers, friends) and she begins about all these things that just go together "We're an oyster cracker on the stew, And the honey in the tea, We're the sugar cubes, one lump or two, In the black coffee, The golden crust on an apple pie, That shines in the sun at noon, We're a wheel of cheese high in the sky"

the relationship is fine, but something has happened: "But we're gonna be sinkin' soon"

Either party of the realationship is too proud or hard headed (Same thing I guess) to admit error: "In a boat that's built of sticks and hay, We drifted from the shore, With a captain who's too proud to say, That he dropped the oar, Now a tiny hole has sprung a leak, In this cheap pontoon, Now the hull has started growing weak, And we're gonna be sinkin' soon."

Great song. My favorite off the album..

It seems quite political to me. This album was made during the Bush Administration and her dislike of Bush can be found in some of the other songs as well. I think it's about how we're "sinking" but being lied to and made to think that things aren't as bad as they really are.
