    definitely the cutest song about alcoholism i've ever heard! the "doo-wop, soda shop, sock-hop" 50s metaphor is kind of awesome. and seriously, watch shortbus.

    He is gay. The song never says the "dear" is a romantic dear or a good friend dear. Besides, people often write songs with the pronouns all wrong just because it makes for a better story. Not everything has to be straight from a person's own life (no pun intended).

    Actually, I think the song is about having to look after yourself after getting drunk-- the 'somehow I dialed my cell' seems to suggest it... but of course, it could also mean that he calls his own cell (which is at home and the friend picks it up).
