I don't think she broke the amplifier. I think the song is driving at the irony that an amplifier is useless without a guitar (or other instrument) to plug into it. The one thing that could have made Danny feel better -- playing his guitar loud -- is impossible, so he has to kill himself.

Best breakup song ever written. And I love the word play near the end ("she took it all, in one big haul" or...."in one big hall, she left his amplifier". Peter Holsapple is one of the best songwriters ever. If you've never seen the video for the song, check it out, it's also brilliant.
