Baby Jesus Lyrics
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
last night I saw the owner kiss it
and whisper in its ear
I was walking home from walgreen's
and he did not hear me see him
and on the
very very next morning
all the subway cars were hallelu-leluing
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
they've been showing it on the news
it was thirty times its size
with a megaphone and a heart-shaped bruise
it was hovering in the skies
and all the
subway cars were hallelu-lelu-leluing, hallejuah
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
believe!...
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
when I woke up I ran and bought it
and locked it in my closet
with a little bread and water
and a flashlight and a first aid kit til he grows
For those who heard the actual song you know it's not angry and a very fun way of being derisive. I don't think she's actually poking fun out of Christianity in particular, but I'm sure she used Baby jesus to make an example out of it. I think this whole song is to poke fun out of extremists and how seriously some people just take religion.
I'm not exactly sure what this song means, but I'm pretty sure that Regina is not an Atheist because there are a few other of her songs that seem to be mocking Atheisim. I think Regina is a Jew, and that this song is maybe talking about the low tolerence that some Christians have for other religions.
Look at the cover of Begin to Hope.. it's pretty obvious

I haven't actually heard her sing it, so I can't be sure of the tone, but I find it to be a mix of anger and mocking at the attitude of Christianity that it is Jesus or hell. I can understand that a non-believer would be annoyed at the attitude, if and when it exists. So, in a sense, as a Christian I'm not bothered by the bulk of the song. I think she expresses an understandable fear of what some zealot might do to her in the name of his god. I'm sure any culture where religious zealots rule has its share of terrified non-believers (see also the Middle East, where unbelief gets you executed).
The only line that offends me is "they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt and the believers get to spit on their graves... believe!..."
I know there are morons out there who send out this kind of signal - but I can tell you the attitude of the Bible toward the unbeliever is ANYTHING but "spit on their grave." The attitude is one of great sadness for the lost - be offended if you like, but do not accuse us of hate.
Oh yeah, I still love you, Regina - and I respect your honest sentiment here - you can only be who you are, and better to be who you are than to fake it!
The song is a story. It's about a little jewish girl who is walking home and sees the owner of the 99 cent store kiss the baby jesus. She has a nightmare about the statue growing and all the christians thinking it's the time for repenting or salvation for whatever. Then she wakes up and runs to the store buys the statue, puts it in her closet and waits for it to grow.
I doubt that Regina Spektor is trying to hate on the christians. If she is making fun of any group is religious extremists as a whole. People need to stop being so cynical about these sort of things.
Lol the recording I have of this she laughs twice while singing the song, this one must amuse her. :)
I can't believe no one has commented on this yet! I love this song...She only plays it in her live shows...It's funny!
I think it's about how everyone is seeing images of jesus and mary all over the place. In a sandwhich, on a tree... in a dollar store. Everyone gets so worked up over it and excited... even the subway cares seem to be praising halellujah. And it's all very silly when you think about it.
I love the way she halellulellujahs. Shes too cute to be true.
haha i agree with ofcourse 56. i love this song, and i love when she says halellulelluing. she's so cute, and the best singer i've ever heard.
