Whatever happened to
Leon Trotsky?
He got an ice pick
That made his ears burn
Whatever happened to
Dear old Lenin?
The great Elmyra
And Sancho Panza?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to
All of the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
No more heroes any more
No more heroes any more
Whatever happened to
All of the heroes?
All the Shakespearoes?
They watched their Rome burn
Whatever happened to the heroes?
Whatever happened to the heroes?
No more heroes any more
No more heroes any more
No more heroes any more
No more heroes any more
Trotsky was a hero because he was a communist who opposed Stalin, after he lost out to Stalin for leadership of the party he fled to Mexico where he hunted down and murdered with an ice pick
Elmyr de Hory was exceptional forger of art
Lenny Bruce was a brave, outspoken comedian who broke many boundaries of acceptability
Sancho Panza is a character in the novel Don Quixote but i dont no why he is hero
One of the greatest british punk anthems.
The lyrics bemoan the lack of heroes in modern life.
I've seen the line "all the shakespearoes" voted into the top ten of worst lyrics in many music magazines, but I love it! Very original.
@Boss Man I seem to remember one of the people associated with "Shakespeare in Love" giving a speech at the Academy Awards when that movie won best picture, saying he'd like to thank "All the heroes, all the Shakespearoes."
@Boss Man For centuries, we celebrate heroes: poets, inventors, philosophes, scientists, etc who changed our life, who fought for our freedoms. In the XXI century, some worship their god and prophet !
The great Elmyra - Elmyr de Hory, an art forger so good that not only are his works collectible, but people have even tried to forge his forgeries!
Dear old Lenny - I think it's dear old Lenin.
There was something heroic about Lenin and Trotsky, whether or not you agree with them, they were larger than life figures who tried to remake the world through a combination of idealism and ruthlessness.
Great song definitely a punk band you just have to listen to them in the context of the time. Definitely their anthem I think referring to certain people as heroes when the western world looks at them differently.
lots of people think its dear old lenin but it is actually dear old lenny refering to lenny bruce the comedian who was arrested for several offences such as saying 'cocksucker' on stage.
On the subject of Sancho Panza; he is likely mentioned a hero because in 'Don Quixote', he is fooled into believing that he is the ruler of an Island. Completely unprepared for the post, he still manages to be a just and fair ruler, until he resigns from his post because the responsibilities become too much.
Power easy come upon, used for good, then passed on. Heroic, yes?
