i believe the 2nd verse begins "It's been a long time since i been soberly low."
this contrasts the 'low' in the song "low" (which is a drug reference), with the 'low' in this song (which is a physical description).
the chronology fits, as well:
"low" is from 1993's Kerosene Hat, while "sweet thistle pie" is from 1996's The Golden Age.
