She seems dressed in all the rings
Of past fatalaties
So fragile yet so devious
She continues to see it
Climatic hands that press
Her temples and my chest
Enter the night that she came home
Forever

Oh (She's the only one that makes me sad)

She is everything and more
The solemn hypnotic
My Dahlia bathed in possession
She is home to me
I get nervous, perverse, when I see her it's worse
But the stress is astounding
It's now or never she's coming home
Forever

Oh (she's the only one that makes me sad)
(Coming alive, she's coming alive)

Hard to say what caught my attention
Vixen crazy, aphid attraction
Carve my name in my face to recognize
Such a pheromone cult to terrorize

I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me

Yeah!

I'm a slave, and I am a master
No restraints and unchecked collectors
I exist through my need, to self-oblige
She is something in me, that I despise

I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me

I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me
I won't let this build up inside of me

She isn't real
I can't make her real
She isn't real
I can't make her real

She isn't real
I can't make her real
She isn't real
I can't make her real

I believe that this song represents a certain lonliness, not a stalking, in which the lyricist is creating an idea of someone in his head, and he is becoming so obsessed with this idea that he actualy starts to think it is real, that would explain the whole "The only one that makes me sad" lyric, in the sense that he gets nothing from her, and the "She is something in me, that I despise" in the sense that he starts hating her, and towards the end he tries to tell himself that "She isn't real" and that he "Can't make her real", it's basically a manisfestation of lonliness. That's just the way I see it though, it has nothing to do with stalking...that would be The Virus of Life and The Nameless...

    My Interpretation
"She seems dressed in all the rings Of past fatalities So fragile yet so devious She continues to see it" She is not a real girl. Something symbolic. Something ancient. Something fatal. Something imaginary. "I get nervous, perverse, when I see her it's worse But the stress is astounding It's now or never she's coming home Forever" But he sees her. In real life. This means he identifies his imaginary woman with a woman who actually exists. But she "makes him sad", because the real girl and the imaginary girl will never be the same. "I am a slave and I am a master" The way his imagination works. He's free to create in his mind, but he's also controlled by his insticts. "I won't let this build up inside of me" But he's not psychotic yet. He knows that he must keep himself sane, or something terrible will happen. (countinued in Vermilion, Pt. 2)

well...i know most of you think that this song is about either being lonely or about a stalker but i see this song in a different point of view. I think this song is about a man who had a wife/gf and she ended up breaking up with him. At first, he states that this woman was the world to him. He became nervous everytime that he saw her and that nothing was more important to him than her. He also states that he rests in her and that he is his home. Because he is thinking about this past relationship, like any other person he takes a pause and states that thinking about her only makes him sad because he though she was perfect for him until proven wrong. Next he states that he doesn't understand why he got so obsessed with her and that his love was one without lust. Then he says that they should carve his name into his face...like..stating that he is blind and that he does not see the truth. It is then followed by saying that being in love (pheromone cult) hurts a lot and that it terrorizes him. Next he says that he is a slave to this depression but at the same time he is the master and that he can do anything that he puts his mind into. It is then followed by himself, in an angered tone, that he can forget about her and that he only needs himself and what he has inside of him (his love for her) is what he despises because it is what keeps on killing him. He then says that he wont let it build up inside of him. Probably meaning that he wont let the depression continue and that he will put an end to this depression that he has due to her leaving. Lastly, he concludes the song saying that the girl that he once thought was perfect never really existed stating that she wasnt what he thought she was and says that he cant change her to be that perfect girl. Well guys, thats my opinion. I know many of you will disagree but hey, its an opinion. Later... stay (sic)

People think this song is about stalking. No, its not. Its about when youre really lonely. When youre really lonely and need a girl nearby, sometimes you “make” one in your imagination. You talk to her and do her. Corey is apparently very lonely. Sure, he has lots of friends, but he doesn't love anyone. This song is about how he realizes that the girl he created isn't real, and he can’t make her real. When you “make” the illusion in your mind, you feel happy and loved, when in reality all it does is push you into deeper despair. He may have seen the girl on the street and liked her a lot, and maybe he “made” his girl look like her, but this song is about loneliness, not stalking.

I think this song is about someone he is making up to love. He is lonely and he creates the perfect woman for himself, but it drives him crazy because he can't make her real.

to me, it's about this girl that he thinks is perfect in every way but is angered and saddened because there is no way that she can exist because there is no such thing as a perfect person.

I think he is talking about being totally obssesed with someone, but trying to convince yourself that you are not, and it becomes thecase, that the only way you can beat the obssesion, is to think of the person as not existing. I don't think Corey is actually saying that she isn't real, only that he will make her not real to him.

There is an old greek Mythos that talks about a man obsessed with statue making, he builds a statue in the likeness of athena and falls in love with it, this is folly, he then dissapears or something like that. This is a kind of realization of that mans error, perhaps it is about realizing an obsession and abolishing it before it gets out of hand. just a though...

this song is about being in love with someone who hurts u emotionally ..... when i first heard this song i was completly in love with this guy who was basically using me and leading me on and i wanted soooo much to not love him and to make myself believe that he didn't love me. "i won't let this build up inside of me" "she isn't real" "when I see her its worse " etc....

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

Moyet later described how her song "Goodbye 70's" had been inspired by her disillusionment with how the late-1970s punk scene had turned out, saying, "'Goodbye 70's' is about punk and not caring how you were dressed, and then I discovered that so many of my friends that I'd thought it all really meant something to just saw it as another trend... That's what 'Goodbye 70's' was all about, about how sour the whole thing became."
