Self Help Lyrics
GREAT track.
When I first saw the title of this song, I was afraid it would be about self help books. But hearing the actual music and seeing the lyrics, makes me think it's about someone who is in despair and trying to get over it. Although I'm not sure what the line "Remind yourself that you're not just in it for the money" means. The first four lines, by the way, are definately typical quotes from self help books :-)
In response to jolarti...Maybe the song is about struggling to find success as a musician. You'll come upon some hard times where nothing seems to be working out, but you have to keep telling yourself that it will be worth it in the end. That would make sense with the "Remind yourself that you're not just in it for the money" line, like you're also in it for the 'love of the game.' Could be a lot of things, but I really love this song & Turin Brakes in general.
i've always thought that about this song, im not a musician myself though.

sometimes i relate this song to my friend who is down all the time because he feels imprisoned in his home due to lack of money, i wish he'd spend more time reminding himself of the things he has, life's so short.
