Grendel's Mother Lyrics
By pure force of will
I look down on the world
From the top of this lonesome hill.
And you can run, and run some more
From here all the way to singapore,
But I will carry you home in my teeth,
You chew meat off the bone.
I beat down the new path to the castle.
I come naked and alone.
I laid my son on the bier; I burned the wreath.
Fire overhead, water underneath.
You can stand up, or you can run.
You and I both know what you've done,
And I will carry you home.
I will carry you home.
I will carry you home in my teeth.
read the book Grendel by John Gardner. You'll understand. it is the best book in the world.
Always makes me think of beowulf, for the obvious reasons. It really shows the other side of the story, with a new protagonist.
i found this song after reading beowulf in my british lit class and recording my own song retelling the story. i should send my song to him.
I love how he says the last line.
i love the carry you home in my teeth stuff, as well as the whole feel to this song.
its obviously about beowulf, but i dunno if i wanna get into the whole story. its just a song about avenging your family and focusing your hatred. it can be interpreted a lot of ways.
read the book Grendel by John Gardner. You'll understand. it is the best book in the world.
yea this song is definitely referring more to Grendel than just Beowolf. Beowolf sucks balls. Grendel is the shit too (no James Joyce tho)
Every time I encounter Beowulf I think about this song. It pretty much defines the poem for me. I love this simple, beautiful, and tragic interpretation of Grendel's mother.
recently read grendel. loved it. poor grendel's mother. :(
