In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think I might not see those eyes
It makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
I nearly do
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
Slower, slower
We don't have time for that
All I want's to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads
Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think I might not see those eyes
It makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
I nearly do
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
Slower, slower
We don't have time for that
All I want's to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads
Have heart my dear
We're bound to be afraid
Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you, dear

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
It doesn't actually matter what the true meaning of a song is though. People relate to different songs in all kinds of ways, and people just state what they get from the song and how it relates to them.
The real meaning doesn't matter, it's what you get from it that's the important thing
I agree that people get/read what they want from a song irrespective of its true meaning. This song is written so beautifully that its easy for everyone to have their own interpretations.

I personally feel that it is about losing or leaving someone you love. Until this year though, I really didn't appreciate how moving this song is.

Having lost my father in the summer, i can see the lyrics from that point of view. I imagine it is exactly how my Mother feels or felt on the day it happened, wanting him to wake up (light up) and speak but understanding why he can't. Saying long goodbyes, being afraid, being right beside you.

I also can see how it can be about the breakup of a long term relationship. Having done this myself only two weeks ago, I think it could be about a couple who still love each other but have to break up because of their situation, maybe long distance or whatever. It makes me think of our last moments at the airport saying our long goodbyes wondering if it will be the last time we ever see each other

To think I might no see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our last goodbyes
I nearly do

Looking in to each others eyes thinking it could work but not here. Wondering deep down inside if you are making the right choice and wanting the other person to speak up and say lets run away from here but understanding why they do not speak as they know they are doing the right thing.

Louder Louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say

Wanting to slow the last moments down as there isn't enough time for all that needs to be said. But talking pointless things to try and take your minds of the enormity of what is happening and confusion in our hearts.

Slower, Slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Being afraid because you don't know how it will be without each other. Knowing it will get easier.

Have heart, my dear
we're bound to be afraid
Even if its just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Still loving and caring for each other and that you will always be in each others hearts and thoughts. Wanting the other person to be happy and get through this.

Light up, Light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot be hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

A song that can evoke so much emotion in everyone who hears it, and bring all these people to comment on it here, surely means it has to be one of (if not 'the' one) the best written songs ever.
Agreed.
