He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

i think this phrase sums it up pretty much.. the rest is just a description of what girls are suppose to represent and be..
marketing ploys, society rules, culture gender definitions.. whichever way you look at it, they place women/girls in a catagory that only allows certain reactions and behaviors from them..
...but the best line would have to be 'typical girls fell like hell'.. trying to conform to what they're suppose to be they end up losing themselves and feeling shitty about it
i love this song
I disagree that this song has a clearcut message like that. Some of the things it points out aren't stereotypes at all and would probably apply to the bandmembers themselves, so it ends up being a rather confused, empty, asinine song.
