Sunlight dances through the leaves
Soft winds stir the sighing trees
Lying in the warm grass
Feel the sun upon your face
Elfin songs and endless nights
Sweet wine and soft relaxing lights
Time will never touch you
Here in this enchanted place

You feel there's something calling you
You're wanting to return
To where the misty mountains rise and friendly fires burn
A place you can escape the world
Where the dark Lord cannot go
Peace of mind and sanctuary by loud water's flow

I've traveled now for many miles
It feels so good to see the smiles of
Friends who never left your mind
When you were far away
From the golden light of coming dawn
Till the twilight where the sun is gone
We treasure ev'ry season
And ev'ry passing day

We feel the coming of a new day
Darkness gives way to light a new way
Stop here for a while until the world,
The world calls you away
Yet you know I've had the feeling
Standing with my senses reeling
This is the place to grow old till
I reach my final day

"Rivendell" refers to the home of the elves in the "Lord of the Rings" books. Neal Peart was a huge J.R.R Tolkien enthusiast, and he uses references from those books to talk about his utopia, a place where you are totally at peace and completely safe. In the books, Rivendell was the one place that Sauron (the dark lord)'s powers had no effect on. Tolkien decribes Rivendell in unbelievable detail in the books, it's really quite amazing. The films also capture it beautifully. Perhaps this was Tolkien's own idea of Utopia.

The fact that Rush was geeky enough to make this song makes them kick so much more ass in this geek's humble opinion.

if you consider rush geeks for writing songs about lotr then i guess you would have to consider led zep geeks too-their songs are packed with lotr references. let me get this straight-in the 70s reading lotr did not make you a geek. i mean, has anyone accussed robert plant of being a geek? i think not

I've been a Rush fan since 1975....i found such a place .... in a few remote mountain passes in the Rio Grande primitive area of the San Juan mountains in southwestern Colorado. ...didn't see anyone for a week....snow capped peaks in early June...Crystal clear rivers.....sweet air to breathe.....

As an extreme LOTR enthusiast, stumbling on this jewel after being introduced to Rush made the band for me.

"Sunlight dances through the leaves Soft winds stir the signing trees Lying in the warm grass Feel the sun upon your face " we all know what he's actually thinking instead of that last word...
