Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
(We're rolling suicide)
Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little make up
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up (hide the scars to fade away the)
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go, create another fable, you wanted to
Grab a brush and put a little makeup, you wanted to
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up, you wanted to
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table? You wanted to
I don't think you trust
In my
Self-righteous suicide
I cry
When angels deserve to die
Ah
Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little make up

Father, into your hands
I commend my spirit

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Please keep your religion to yourself, you can practice it all you want, just dont push it on everybody else. Im really gettin tried of hearin about jesus. Lets talk about the easter bunny, they're very similar.
We can do whatever we want in our religion, seeing as we have freedom of speech and freedom of religion. We're not religious communists, so stop pushing THAT on us. Nobody said you had to read the religious entries. And if you're so tired of hearing about Jesus, go somewhere where there is no Christianity. Good luck finding a place... And don't insult our messiah by compairing him to a children's character. Yes, duh, there are similarities. But that's because the Easter bunny is a symbol for the Christian holiday.
First of all they're not "pushing" religion on you. People are just expressing what they see. i didn't read a sentence that had said "dude..be Christian." YOu may not have noticed but quite a bit of Systems' song have to do with religion...or are you too dim to see that?
Evlwolf is absolutely right. However, there are 51 countries where Christianity will get u killed or imprisoned, he can head to one of those (ex. China) if he really wants to escape reality. And you wanna talk about the EASTER Bunny, instead of religion huh? You know Easter is the holiday celebrating Christ's resurrection right? Maybe we could talk about Christmas instead--no wait that's also a Christian holiday. I hope you also know that the Bible is the most historically accurate book in existence, and that has been proved by Christians and non-Christians alike. If you wanted to escape Christianity... you picked a horrible band to try to do that with.

I'm not in anyway trying to push Christianity on you, you have your beliefs and I have mine, and that's perfectly fine with me. But that's not going to stop me from expressing my beliefs to you or anyone else, last time I checked I still have my God-given rights of Free Speech and Free Religion.
Elfwolf, you said we have have freedom of speech, so don't say "don't insult our messiah" because we have the right to do so.
Nothing to say that hasn't already been said, but i have a bit of criticism.
MusicNeedsPoetry, what OwnPersonalDemon said could technically be considered slander or libel, a crime. He's attempting to defame the name of an important religious figure without any evidence (and evidently, knowledge) supporting his stance.
Of course, this only applies if said person lives in the United States or another country which outlaws the practice.
I also find it ironically hilarious that MusicNeedsPoetry rebuked Evlwolf for attempting to compromise someone's freedom of speech by telling him to compromise his own.
What I find most amusing is that both Evlwolf and BrysN are wrong in referring to Easter and Christmas as Christian holidays celebrating the 'birth of Christ' and the 'resurrection of Christ'.
Now, I'm not saying that Jesus didn't exist, (historically, there is evidence that a man known as Jesus of Nazareth did exist) so don't be pulling me down on that. Nor am I saying that this Jesus didn't claim to be the son of God, and, who knows, maybe he was (I'm open to the idea of religion, I just don't practice any). What I am saying is that it is widely believed by many scholars that both Easter and Christmas were holidays celebrated by pagans, and the Christians conveniently shifted some of their dates around in order for their own holidays to coincide with the holidays (principally Saturnalia for Chistmas) of the pagan religions, thus enticing more pagans into Christianity. breathes
In fact, many historians say that it is likely he was born in January, or even over Spring/Summer (many have predicted July as being the most likely). It's also interesting to note that the earliest account of his birth was written in 221 C.E., over 200 years after he was born.
Maybe if you have a problem with religion, you should listen to one of the millions of songs out there that don't DIRECTLY QUOTE THE BIBLE! Seriously, religion is a very obvious interpretation for this song due to the quotation, do you want everyone here to ignore it and censor themselves, just because of your own personal issues?
christmas and easter are pagan holidays.. just putting that out there
^ That wouldn't make any sense at all, considering what they symbolize.
... I wanted to see if I could dislike my comment, and apparently I could. :S
Ummm BrysN, who told you the Bible was the most historically correct book in existence? I was reading the replies and was surprised no one shot that down. Really? Do I have to explain this? There isn't a SINGLE book thats more historically correct out there? ....I think many. I don't believe the Bible should be interpreted literally, nor would it be historically correct if it was. Considering what I just said, historical books are NOT supposed to be interpreted if they were to be considered factual (don't get me wrong, interpreting historical texts is important, too, it just doesn't constitute as FACT if it's interpreted). Historical books are supposed to be HISTORICAL (i.e. factual). I don't think the Bible lives up to the reputation of factuality you gave it. Were you watching the History Channel again? (The History Channel is a business, hence Monster Quest and Ancient Aliens.... they want money, so they'll put whatever can't be DISPROVEN on there to entertain us. It doesn't work on me.) Just a guess as to where you got that information, no assumptions here. WHO WATCHES SOUTHPARK??? THE FIRST THANKSGIVING WAS VISITED BY ALIENS FTW!!!!
People should be able to express their beliefs without being accused of pushing it on anyone. Too many people these days are just downright paranoid against Christianity.
pfft...such is a comment from an angry atheist over a decade ago...i'll just say this, is it not dogma to be shepherd to the lost little lambs? a good christian's duty is to save others souls by brining them into the fold (conversion), of course they are well intentioned, thinking that a person will be better off as part of the flock because their soul will reach heaven and all (altho it could be argued that the more sheep you convert the more brownie points you get with st peter). I praise christians who can speak about their beliefs without consciously or unconsciously adding a sales pitch to their rhetoric, because its pretty fucking hard not to...
