Your Possible Pasts Lyrics
Some brightened and crazy some frightened and lost
A warning to anyone still in command
Of their possible future to take care
In derelict sidings the poppies entwine
With cattle trucks lying in wait for the next time
Do you think we should be closer?
Haunting her face like a cheap hotel sign
Her cold eyes imploring the men in their macs
For the gold in their bags or the knives in their backs
Stepping up boldly one put out his hand
He said, "I was just a child then now I'm only a man"
Do you think we should be closer?
Shown how to feel good and told to feel bad
Tongue tied and terrified we learned how to pray
Now our feelings run deep and cold as the clay
And strung out behind us the banners and flags
Of our possible pasts lie in tatters and rags
Do you think we should be closer?

definatley my favorite on the final cut. i love the part about being "tongue tied and terrified we learned how to pray, now our feelings run deep and cold as the clay." to me, its like we had all these strange emotions as children and they were blinded by faith. this part really means a lot to me i dont know i just really agree with it. in church its like this hypocracy thing: your told to feel comforted by divinity but at the same time your kinda terrified of it and told to feel really shity about your sins.
the part about "feelings run deep and cold as the clay" and the chorus "do you remeber me..." kinda go hand in hand. to me its saying that you have burried and supressed your emotions. the chorus is like your hidden and burried emotions from childhood or whenever trying to force themselves to the surface and saying "hey there..its me your emotions. remember? why are you supressing me? dont you think you should deal with your problems instead of just covering them up?" ("dont you think we should be closer?")
i dont know. it all makes sense in my head. it might not come across clear its just what i think. whatever its not like anyone is actually reading this no one has like even heard of this album. damn. oh well.

Floyd does not write songs... These guys write literature. This song makes me go crazy! Makes me think of all the years gone by, regrets, joys, memories, failed romances, friends... One of my all time favourites...

tongue tied and terrified we learned how to pray now our feelings run deep and cold as the clay
Umm, is there some alternate version that I don't know about. My version skips straight from "shown how to feel good and told to feel bad" to "and strung out behind us the banners and flags..."
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

best song off of the best and most underrated PF album of all time. cant get enough of this album. This is one of the firs albums i was ever given. got it when i was around 6 or 7 and i have not stopped listening to it since.
Absolutely agree. I remember at a very young age my dad playing this album all the time. He always said Pink Floyd, Eagles, and Janis Joplin had the most amazing talent!

inpraiseoffolly, I just noticed that too..... Mine skips.

Mine too... WTF? Can someone explain? Was this censored?

the lyrics in question appear in the liner of the original LP, they do not appear in the liner of the CD Remaster. The lyrics are do not appear in the actual recording used on the CD or the LP, there is no explanation as to why this is. So there is only 1 version of this song.
coming from someone who owns both the vinyl LP and the CD

PF bloody fuckin rules. I am shocked there are so few comments. I'm on my blackberry so I can't type well or give any lengthy thoughts. Just a godamned great song.

This song calls up feelings of oppression, of the general destructiveness of society on the individual. "I was just a child then, now I'm only a man." You start off beautiful and bright as a child, but the world quickly forces you out of that innocent light. It also makes me think of regrets...the whole idea of "possible pasts", the great "what might have beens". The chorus is pure rejection. The individual is no longer good enough for whoever he's speaking too. Of course this song has a meaning more directly relating to the album, but these are the connotations of the song for me.

Before I first heard this song, I never thought about the concept of "possible pasts".
