Blue, Red And Grey Lyrics
Get up early just to watch the sun rise
Some people like it more when there's fire in the sky
Worship the sun when it's high
Some people go for those sultry evenings
Sipping cocktails in the blue, red and grey
But I like every minute of the day
Every moment has its special charm
It's all right when you're around, rain or shine
I know a crowd who only live after midnight
Their faces always seem so pale
And then there's friends of mine who must have sunlight
They say a suntan never fails
I know a man who works the night shift
He's lucky to get a job and some pay
And I like every minute of the day
I can laugh in the snow and rain
I get a buzz from being cold and wet
The pleasure seems to balance out the pain
I even shun the south of France
The people on the hill, they say I'm lazy
But when they sleep, I sing and dance
Some people have to have the sultry evenings
Cocktails in the blue, red and grey
But I like every minute of the day

There's more if you fit it into the context of the album - all about how Pete Townshend is sad he's become an alcoholic worn out rock star. He has no concept of time or place, trashing hotel rooms, up all night, etc. Probably doesn't know what time of day it is unless it's pitch black or glaring sun, and the weather is the only variable in his daily routine of excess. This song actually sounds pretty sad but he's kind of cheering himself up. He knows some partiers, and he knows some new agers, and he knows some business people, but life is too diverse to get stuck fixated on one element. This song has really helped me out of some low places. I just think the love element, "as long as you are on my mind" is a bit forced.
@interpretator I believe you're spot on here and no more needs be considered.

although my top 10 Who songs are always changing, this one is ALWAYS on it - BEAUTIFUL! - the guitar, the lyrics EVERYTHING!

The tone and lyrics go perfectly with the ukulele. One of those things where you wonder if that was the intent or it was dumb luck. Whatever the case... Brilliant.

this is such a simple beautiful song, one of my favorites even though it is so unlike most other Who songs. For me, it is just showing that every part of every day is equally unique and amazing, not to take anything for granted.

It's pantheism. It's also the Sufi doctrine of seeing God in everything, both ugly and beautiful. On a sunny, gorgeous day and also on a rainy miserable one, God is manifest.

It's a really beautiful song. It would probably be loitering around my top 10 Who songs as well.

Its its actually a uke not a guitar.

to me, it's both a sad song, but also has a very strong buddhist sentiment he is lost, but also understands that the key to life is enjoying the very moment you are living in.... there are so many experiences, but you being there for them is what's important... the rhymes are so wonderful and the feeling... this is not the who, this is straight pete townshend

The image I have when I picture people "sipping cocktails in the blue, red, and gray" is of guests in formal attire, like men in navy blue or gray suits/blazers and perhaps a red carnation or rose in their lapel and women in colorful dresses. Those kinds of events and showy displays, though, do not seem to interest the speaker at all.
