Bullet Proof Soul Lyrics

I was so in love with you
You rarely see a love that's true
Wasn't that enough for you
Wasn't that enough for you
I would climb a mountain
I wouldn't want to see you fall
Rock climb for you
And give you a reason for it all

You kept on thinking
You were the only one
Too busy thinking
Love is a gun

Hit me like a slow bullet
Like a slow bullet
It took me some time to realise it

You keep on thinking
You were the only one
Too busy thinking
Love is a gun

I know the end before
The story's been told
It's not that complicated
But you're gonna need a bullet proof soul

You keep on thinking
You were the only one
Too busy thinking
Love is a gun

I know the end before
The story's been told
It's not that complicated
But you're gonna need a bullet proof soul

You were trigger happy baby
You never warned me let me free
It's not that complicated
But you're going to need a bullet proof soul
Think you got it but you got all the trouble you need
I came in like a lamb
But I intend to leave like a lion

It hit me like a slow bullet
It hit me like a slow bullet

yup...i completely agree...in the begin she describes what she endured in the relationship and how deeply she may have felt for this person..but it was never reciprocated and was taken for granted. Then as the song continues, so does her transition from being the victim, to accepting the pain BUT finding strength in knowing the other person has it coming to them...be it from her or someone else...LOVE THIS SONG!..SPEAKS SO TRUE FOR ME :)

This is one of my fav Sade Songs.... It has a lot of meaning I guess....

I think it's about Cheating.... and or Being taken advantage of... The line quoted above is so deep.... but my line is:

" I came in like a Lamb... But I intend to leave like a lion"

WOW! She is telling old boy the you messed up bad this time! I was so silly and I gave you all these chances to love me right, to love me strong, to love just me... but you just keep messing around. I saw the end coming... and to delay the pain (The Slow Bullet Theory) I just stayed with you.... But now... I am out and out Hard and Strong!

Damn Sade can write!!

I AGREE!!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE SADE SONGS TOO!!! I think that she is using the metaphor of the gun to say that he used her love as an advantage hurt her. What I mean is when someone knows that you truly love them sometimes they seem to take it for granted and they tend to take advantage as well. But I definitely agree that the tables were turned. And in the end she learned alot.

Love is a gun. Some people will not only take advantage of your love for them, they'll also "love bomb" you to win you over. Then they do whatever they want with you.

Hit me like a slow bullet. You were trigger happy, baby.
At first it all feels so genuine that you can't help but fall hard, but then slowly they use that love to trap you.

I came in like a lamb - another indication that the consequence of that love bullet was feeling weak and vulnerable.

It's true, hurting someone this way is so wrong, using false love as a tool to manipulate, you are really skating the edge of evil. So if you do this kind of thing, it's you who is going to need the bulletproof soul.

to me i can relate to this song... I was deeply infatuated w/ this guy who I knew felt the same way about me but when we werent together, he acted cold. He always told me from the beginning that he had dreams he had to conquer and he couldn't let others get in the way (hint hint- me) but i went along w/ the ride b/c i loved being w/ him. but then i couldnt shake the feelings of failure w/ him, b/c like sade, i knew the ending already. so when i ended it w/ him, i finally confessed the untold truths about me, about him, about us and he couldnt say anything b/c then it was me who came out the strong one.

OK, but what does the line, "Too busy thinking love is a gun" mean? How is love like a gun?

@danfromboston In this song Sade is talking to herself. Her love was not reciprocal and was doomed to die. The understanding that he cannot fall in love with her came to her in a time. But she was not able switch her love off to avoid that torture. And this period was like a slow motion in which she was shot. The gun was her love. And in that motion she was hit by bullet and she was falling down dying - frame by frame. Watching that motion she understood that she need bullet proof soul to survive.

I think the words of this song refer to herself. She is talking to herself. She loved and her love was not reciprocal. Her love was so strong, dependant, tender and vital, blossom in feelings and endearment that she thought that anyone could be satisfied, but not him. Try after try, date after date she was seeing and understanding that her love was doomed to die - "slow bullet" here means not the bullet itself but the slow motion, where bullet hits and victim falls down slowly loosing drops of blood. She was happy baby, never waiting such hit. She thought she need love, sun and skies - but she understood that she really need bullet proof soul first. I think this is the story of this song.

Song Meaning

This is just my interpretation of the song, I can personally resonate with what she is saying. It seems like she is speaking as herself and addressing the person that hurt her throughout the whole song:

At the beginning she was very in love and infatuated with this person. She loved him deeply and gave him everything in the relationship. She would climb mountains for him. "You kept on thinking you were the only one" could have different meanings. It could mean that he was selfish and he only saw himself and prioritised himself in the relationship, or it could mean that he is a fool to think that she will remain to be dependent on him forever and that to her he is the only one. "Too busy thinking love is a gun." This line could mean that he sees love as a game and anyone who he gets in a relationship with him he disrespects by shooting them with an invisible gun (which is his hurtful words or actions) but his victims don't realise because the bullet moves slowly. This could mean that he is incapable of showing or giving real love to his partners because he could be a narcissist. My interpretation may be a bit confusing sorry. "Hit me like a slow bullet, took me some time to realise it" she doesn't realise that he is not a good person at the beginning. His words and actions hit her like a slow bullet crumbling away at her character, confidence and her essence, and she doesn't realise it at first because her partner is doing it in a non obvious way. He is manipulative. This is how narcissists operate in relationships."I know the end before the story's been told" could mean that she knows the ending of this relationship and it is a positive one for her. The story is her life. This could mean that she will break free from his chains before the story's been told which is the end of her life. She knows she will empower herself and break away from him instead of be a "slave" to him forever. "You're gonna need a bullet proof soul..." She is addressing him when she says this. He thinks that she is naive and will never break free from him but he is wrong. She knows she has been played and manipulated and she will break free and empower herself and this action will hit him like a gun. So he will need a bullet proof soul when she breaks herself free from his games, because the shock of her power will shock him like a bullet. "I came in like a lamb, but I intend to leave like a lion.." She came to the relationship naive, but she intends to break herself free and gain her strength, power and confidence back

I think when she says your gonna need a bullet proof soul, she means that the harmful partner is gonna need a bullet proof soul to escape the karma and wrath of God coming his way for the harm he has done in his life and to her!
