I Loves You, Porgy Lyrics
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
And I'll be glad
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I wants to stay here with you forever
I've got my man
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man
He's going to handle me and hold me
So, it' going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know I'll have to go
Don't let him take me
Honey, don't let him handle me
and drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man

this song is one of the ones that best demonstrate how achingly beautiful billie's voice was.

billie holiday, i mean. nina simone is my favourite singer of all time, but i don't think her version of this song compares to billie's version.

Just a musical fragment from Gershwin's standard-filled "folk opera" Porgy and Bess, beautifully expanded into a jazzy love song. Bess' passive but passionate ballad motivates the climactic fight to the death between Porgy and Crown.
p.s. I love Billie too, but give it up for Nina; this is a jazz art-song classic.

I love how this song provides you with a sheath in the middle of whatever maelstrom you're going through personally. Both Nina and Billie sing it masterfully. Nina's voice feels a little more knowing to me though.
