When I heard this song the first time, I literally 'felt' the meaning, especially by the way its sung.
It's about the result of being ruled by the roost and internalising your feelings, people that get stepped on, and 'don't let it out' (stand up for themselves) hence the line "we're the keepers of their destiny". If you don't express your anger about something, things will keep on going they way they have been and people or society will always be shat on.

Maybe it's just abstract? and not meant to have any specific meaning? That was my first assumption, I thought he was just singing about a character being a murderer, but then I considered another possibility....
Paying close attention to the fact it mentions science turning us into Gods if we are not careful. I think it's actually referring to fetal research, as in stemcell research on aborted babies, or even the prospect of cloning, bio-engineering in general. The scientist, is a murderer....
"Aisha we've only just met, but I think you ought to know, I'm a scientist that plays God with the world and borders on the extremeties of morality and ethics"
The second verse is just making the comparison, its like saying, whats the difference between a murderer and this guy? how are they any different, and then in the 3rd, we get introduced to the fact that he is possibly a scientist, the rest speaks for itself, the rules are all wrong, every perversion is justified, I still want to be human, but what am I? Ive now, got an alternative take on this song... what if its about illegal immigrants.... and the person being sung about is the general populations attitude, ie. close them off, and keep them out.... so my concept goes something like this.... the people bleeding are people who are struggling to make it day to day (their hearts are bleeding and they need relief), so they try cross the border from whatever country (yes, even mexico) but the authorities (and the general population) turn them away "with their noses in the air"... they dont even want to help relieve some of the suffering, not even by applying "pressure on the wound".. you get my drift? great song, so many intepretations... |

wow minor disturbance, i never knew that, but now that you mention it, i think it may have been done purposely (being the final song they ever played). I think it's a 3rd person perspective of himself, first verse, hes describing the point before his seizure. in the second hes describing the depression, and in the third he is detached, he doesnt care so much what happens anymore, and is just fed up with the repetitive cycle that is his life (day in, day out, day in, day out), which is also ingrained into the music, it's a whirlwind of mixed emotions.
At the point he wrote this song, he already made the decision of dying, because of this, he then asks himself not to fade away. Considering his epileptic condition (most likely temporal-lobe epilepsy) he most probably also suffered symptoms of depersonalization: the surreal feeling of being outside of ones own mind/body. This song is ian, telling himself not to fade away from the rest of the world, like he wanted himself to live on after death, i personally think he has. What do you think? |

when looking at the lyrics of atmosphere and many of their songs, its important to look at it from ians point of view, one of self-hate (probably because of his epilepsy), isolation and confusion.
I think quite simply, this song is to those who misunderstood him, i have a feeling ian was talkative, and confrontative to the ones who were closest to him. People often make irrational attacks on the ones they love or truly care about, it happens because we are vulnerable and scared.
"My illusion, worn like a mask of self-hate, confronts and then dies". He's saying, dont leave me here by myself, its all an act, im really not as tough as a make myself out to be, and the only reason i do it to this extent, is because i dont find it as easy as people like you (who don't have see things the way i do). im confused and vulnerable, dont leave until you see that part of me. "every corner abandoned too soon". The people that misundestood (or were confused by) his behaviour, often misunderstood a lot more than just him, they never read between the lines. So he's just asking them, to stick by him, "don't walk away, don't walk awaaaay, in silence".

i agree with xtiandeth, well done, ian had epilepsy, most likely temporal-lobe epilepsy, which most sufferers describe as being complete, or one with the world for that split second (sometimes even longer). its his "one lucky prize". in all of this isolation, because of him being so different, and because of the difficulties faced with his epilepsy, he needed something to hold on to, and through everything, that's all that he felt was worth it, that one moment in time where he would feel complete. A blindness that touches perfection, but hurts just like anything else. I love this song, my favourite one by these guys. |

I'm sick of seeing posts about Donnie Darko. Yeah sure, it was a great movie, now shut up and talk about the song.
I think this song is about how little we know about ourselves, he is confused about why he even falls for the person, I'm sure we've all had those confused feelings for someone at some point. He doesn't say why he becomes head over heels, because it just happens, it's intuitive. I can't really account for the 2nd verse talking about "gun in your hand", but whenever I hear it, I keep thinking he says "knot in your heart", which also makes more sense considering he's talking about being head over heels in love. It would make more sense because there is confusion as to why he likes the girl in the first place, for she has "no ambition".
It's murky, he doesn't understand why he likes her so much, yet he wants to see where it will lead, and it seems as though she's just going to throw it away because she’s not interested, or doesn't care etc. It's about the whole "guy likes girl" but "girl doesn’t like guy" dilemma (or vice-versa). The “four-leaf clover” is him putting it all down to luck, just hoping that it works out, even though they are so different.

when you look at the referances in the song, it makes a lot of sense, i think its also about the never ending struggle of humanity (history repeating itself, hence "i thought you died alone, a long long time ago") but when you look at it as a whole, and ask yourself "who is the man that sold the world?"
the only true answer that comes back to me, is god.... makes a lot of sense also "thought you died alone, a long long time ago" there havent been any new major religions with a god base for 1500 years.... "search for form and land" a referance to the bible, moses and/or adam and eve... we seem to be fading from religion with god as a base slowly..."We passed upon the stair" stairway to heaven.. i think bowie was trying to tell us, that to him, god sold the world to the devil, hence the chaos in the world....... so i agree with scholesy on that one too.... it's always up for interpretation, which is what is so great about music, but i quite strongly believe it is a referance to god |
